hilux surf 3L TD under 200,000km

Hi all!
I'm interested in buying a hilux surf 3.0L TD, but know next to nothing about them. I've seen one sitting on the side of the road for sale, it's done 178,000km. I've heard what might be a bit of an old wives tale, that you shouldn't touch any 3.0L TD that's done under 200,000km as it hasn't been 'worn in' properly, and anything over 200,000km will be good until pretty much 500,000km. Any thoughts or advice please?? Much appreciated
