4x4 for Steve
Saturday February 28th 2015.
The Whangarei Four Wheel Drive Club including friends of Steve Sandford-Hill have banded together to present an opportunity to join them on a 4x4 tag along event to raise funds to assist Steve with the on-going treatment he requires. All low range type 4x4 vehicles are invited to an opportunity to traverse some scenic tracks and to experience the wonders of our mighty west coast.
A donation to help support the treatments required, your own low range type 4x4 vehicles and a willingness to enjoy a day out 4 wheel driving is all that’s required. The individual vehicle donation would be expected to be in the vicinity of $45.00 per vehicle but higher donations’ will be gratefully accepted.
The event will be a guided self drive tour over varying degree of difficulty terrain with optional easier tracks available for those that don’t wish to risk vehicle damage. The organisers reserve the right to cancel, postpone or arrange an alternative trip depending on weather conditions on the day. The idea is to have a safe traverse of the coastal sand dunes and tracks with minimal risk of vehicle damage.
Agenda:- 08.30 - 09:00 Meeting at the Countdown/warehouse car park Victoria St Dargaville.
9.05 Drivers Briefing.
09:15 Travel to Te Maire track onto Kapiro Beach.
12:00 Lunch (bring you own)
16:00 Finish with a drive up Mahuta Gap.
Each Vehicle will need:- Your Donation, A sense of humour/fun, A full tank of gas, Normal tyre changing gear, jack spare tyre and wheel brace, tyre gauge, Lunch, drinks (non-Alcoholic).
We will provide an air compressor to re-inflate tyres at the end of the day. All enquiries please call/text Alan on 021 205 0594 or Colin on 027 654 8882 to register your attendance. A registration pack will be e mailed to you and this must be completed before acceptance of your entry.

A word from Steve:-
Hi, my name is Steve Sandford-Hill. In May 2014 I was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease (MND). I have Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) which is the most common type of MND (one of 4) with both upper and lower motor neurone involvement. ALS is characterised by muscle weakness and stiffness, over-active reflexes and, in some cases, rapidly changing emotions. Initially the limbs cease to work properly. The muscles of speech, swallowing and breathing are usually also later affected.
With no medical treatment or cures for this disease within New Zealand, I am seeking alternative treatments abroad and at this point in time (November 2014), stem cell treatment looks to be the most promising in offering hope of arresting, reversing or stopping progression of ALS.
