School me on KZJ78 Diffs

Post by uptomynutsinruts »

Hey all,

Just chucked some 35s on the prado, look awesome but is pretty high geared now, are there any R&P's that fit these diffs (e.g. from a surf) so that I can change ratio, I think its 4.3 at the moment so wanting to go to either 4.5 or 4.8
And are there any lsd units that bolt into these diffs?

Cheers

4.5 ratio will be a pain as if one breaks in the front it's only replacement will be new gear sets. 4.88 are the way to go, as said from lj models that's the 2.4 motors not the 3 liter ones. All hilux lsd units will fit with replacement bearings or look at putting a locker in the back Hope this helps.

don't go too low in the R&P ratio the lower they are the weaker they are (more teeth = less meat :D ) and you'll start ripping the teeth off with all the extra leverage from the shiny new tyres :D prado are high pinion front diffs unlike lux stuff but that's pretty common knowledge so I'm sure you already know that :D if you've got a couple of grand + burning a hole in your pocket that you don't know what to do with you could buy a set of marks adaptors lower transfer case gears :D

If your pricing up R&P replacement check bearing & seal price as well. (assuming you are doing those since you've got it all open). I got a rude shock, was $600 when I'd guessed cpl hundy. But mine is electric rear locker, I think that has an oddball bearing size so was dearer. And there are different gear carriers between the LJ and KJ, (4 arm and 2 arm) which have different thickness rings, so if you can swap the whole diff head out of a LJ78 donner might be better than just trying to swap the gears. I bought gears through Tim, was only $100 or so dearer than ebay out of states and I figured A - good to shop local B - lot easier to send something back to nz than states if I got the wrong thickness and C - Tim knew what he was talking about while I was getting more and more confused.

What are you looking at getting just open for the time being?? Im building diffs up now and have 4.88s in stock rear one has had some use but will put new bearings through it and the front one is mint condition, both are open was looking for around $800 Exchange with your diffs for the pair also have a lockrite that i could install in the rear for an extra $460 Might be out of your price range but let me know. Cheers
