Noisy but make good power for what they are.

Common problems that I know of:

Oil pressure switch leaks, look for oil on the RH lower engine. $15 for the part and about an hour to replace.
Cam chain guide can wear out causing engine failure. Only read about this so don't know what the symptoms are.

Only had ours for 3 years/ 30,000km but never had any problems with the engine.

We have one 3.2 and two 2.5's. The 3.2 is by far the better motor, more even power and the torque comes on from a lot lower down. Has done 70000 km in low box on a south island high country station and still going strong. Only issue we have had is with egr coke'ing up. May be due to the driver being an older more gentle type driver

My 2007 3.2 Triton is just about to hit 290,000 km.
So far I have replaced - filters and oil.
I have had the intake manifold de-coked, blanked off the egr and cut out the dpf filter.
Only did the egr and dpf jobs last week as a preventative measure.

I regularly tow 3+ tonnes, done the taupo road twice since new year with heavy ag equipment on a trailer dragging behind, down to 60kmh on titiokura hill!
Still manage an average of 12.6 litres per 100 km.

I would buy one for myself if I needed to, but for now I'l still with the company one :D

My 2c

Cheers for the replys.
Real world use in NZ is much more helpful than overseas stuff I reckon.

the first of the 3.2 DiD pajeros had a rebuildable diesel pump (1999 models only IIRC), then they were throw away jobs ($$!!!) until the common rail motor. Ask a diesel specialist with your pump numbers. I recall seeing a bench full of buggered pumps at a local rebuilders. Mine was a 1999 and had done 380,000 when I sold it and it still pulled like a schoolboy

Great motor I reckon, mines done 122,000km. Just had boost sensor shit out but caryard payed for that. Parents had one with trouble free running from new to 110,000km. Have just cleaned my intake manifold and uped the boost a bit, alot of info on Newtriton forum. Will do exhaust next.

On the non common rail ones over 300ks break the top timing chain guide ( I have replaced the chains ) also have done the pumps only one place in ausy that really does them cost $$$$$$ like 6k job common failure between 180- 400ks

I just bought one of these with 240k on the clock and the engine feels fantastic compared to some of the older Pajeros I owned. Had a problem with smoke coming out of the back after a week, so took it back to the dealer and Diesel and Turbo looked at it. Turbo wastegate was seized, EGR was stuck in the open position and the hose to the EGR valve was split.

All fixed and goes even better then before, which I already thought was pretty damn good. Bit noisier then some of the modern engines but I actually like the sound it makes.

Oh and props to the vehicle dealer, they were great, gave me a loaner and kept me really well informed :)

Cheers for the info - just for feedback I ended up with a V6 MK Triton DC ute . So far so good, stock as but that will do for tripping around farms etc for freezer filling.
But if Santa has a lift kit, snorkle and some steels with muds fitted Im here.........
