Mickey Thompson 33s

Post by crispo »

Hey team, just purchased a Hilux with a set of Mickey Thompson 33x12.5x15 on it, I've never had 33s before so not sure if normal but seems quite heavy in the steering.

Seem really good tyres just a bit noisy, was thinking of getting some Hankook Dynopros in same size or would that be a silly idea?

Just curious what these would be worth? theres about 7ish mm in the centre I think and over 15 on the sides?

Cheers

I can't comment on the value of the tyres. But if the centre tread is much more worn out than the outer edges, tyres have been over inflated and run like that for extended periods. Probably all their life.

As for heavy steering, could be because of such wide tyres. But is it heavy when you are slow and parking OR heavy all the time.

Hey mate, yea clearly been over inflated. Erm steering just heavy only heavy really at low speeds which would be due to the tyre size I guess.. The truck does make a few clunks and squeaks from front when turning at slow speed. Ive experienced similar in the past hiluxs but they have only been leaf spring ones which is normal but this is IFS. Im a little mechanical minded but no expert on lifted trucks etc. The truck has been clearly lifted, body lift and I don't know what else, steering has been extended etc. All certed but is there any other issues that I could check over that may come as a result of the lift that could cause the squeaks.

Cheers

I don't know much about Toyotas, but this is a possibility with older vehicles of any kind.

Yea I think I might have a look at the power steering pump. The engine is oil leak free but the power steering pump did have oil over it. Apparently the steering extension was only done when it went for its cert and unsure how long it was stretched. May have bust the seals maybe..

Just one further question, what pressure should I run these 33s at for road use. ?

Cheers guys

Steering extension? This might just be from coloum to steering box should have effected steering...

Im look at power steer fluid and pump

Old could be old and need changing

There is no magic pressure reading that works for all vehicles. Best to do a chalk test:

How to do the Chalk Test:

1. Buy some sidewalk chalk.
2. Draw a line of chalk across the treads of the tires (left to right, not around the circumference).
3. Drive about 10/15 metres, stop and see how the chalk has worn off.
4.a If the chalk is not worn evenly across the tire treads, (i.e. only in the middle), then lower the tire pressure. <---most likely scenario.
4.b If the chalk is worn only on the outer edges, increase tire pressure.
5. Apply chalk to the treads again.
6. Keep repeating till you get even wear on the chalk line. ----> Thats the pressure suitable for your truck.

When doing the test, drive in a straight line.
