knew the clutch didn't have much in it when I get her, and turning up the motor has finally smoked it, seems like a major to do myself..

anyone recommend a place in AKL (pref north shore) that can do the clutch kit and replacement?

Are you kidding? This is a one-box (of beer) job to DIY.
Drop the drive shafts, unbolt trans and slide it back, replace clutch bits, refit, drive on!
If you have the tools and a gopher it can be done before lunch.

If you want to do the pilot bearing and flywheel, plan ahead and buy the bearing, find a machine shop to drop the f.w too.

Oh really? In that case I'd give it a go. Read somewhere it was a major job

You have not done 1 then?

Bit more than that, you have to remove torsion bars so front end has to be well off the ground..

Never assume its a half day job cause it never works that way..

Allow 1 day to setup and remove, you then need to send off your fly to get machined.

Then allow 1 day to re fit..

Not a terrano, no, but plenty of others. seems silly that they'd put things in the way, though after having worked on the saf I could believe it!

Why must you remove the torsion bars??

Because the torsion bar cross member is under the box and needs to be removed. I have done a few now and it can be removed in about 2 hours without a hoist if the torsion bars come out easy. If they are seized in it can take that long just to get them out.

One thing I really like about the old Toyota IFS is how the t-bars pivot on the upper a-arm. Good for maintenance and out of harms way. Ultimately I want to get rid of the t-bars altogether and go to a progressive coil spring

Did u just compliment Toyota ifs?

so its a mission?. ill probably just pay someone to do it? does the flywheel need to be machined as well?

drive in get it fixed = warrantee pay the moola drive out.. simple if you don't quite have the skills..

Still not quite understanding. Why does the cross member need to be dropped?

Yeah. The way I've always managed to do it, is unbolt trans FROM the cross member, and slide the trans back ON it.
It only needs to move 8".
But as I said, I've never done it on a narva.

So no one has any recommendations?

its a bit like recommending a gas station that can sell petrol any mechanical workshop can replace a clutch its all pretty basic routine stuff, you might want to do a bit of ringing around if you don't have a local guy you use you'll find you'll get some pretty different prices in what you'll get quoted, it's worth doing a bit of research if you want a good clamping clutch not all clutches are equal and just coz a clutch or pressure plate is called heavy duty or extreme doesn't necessarily mean its got good clamping pressure dual friction clutch plates are good if they make them for your truck make sure a new pilot and release bearing and a flywheel grind are included, if those things have dual mass flywheels watch out for $suprises$ you want to expect about a days labour plus machining plus parts plus gst
