A mates just got a 97 pajero jap import e-v45w gyuc model, what was the nz new equivalent? Nm?

NL was the last of the gen 2 shape, NM was 1999 new shape. It's prob a NK or a NL, very few NK were made and the NL generally had the flares guards.
