Navara/Patrol Project

Post by BikeRider »

Hey guys

Ive managed to get a hold of a GQ? SWB chassis and 90% of the running gear. Just after some advice on whether putting a late model D22 Navara cab and tray on would work? I'd also want to put a TD42 turbo motor and also the efi from a later model engine, any input or thoughts would be much appreciated

If it swb you will only get a single cab body on...

If its a navara cab you wont fit a td42 in that engine bay..

How much cutting grinding and welding are you prepared to do? Cause you're going to be building a new fire wall. And putting your rad on the back as well I guess.

People fit straight 6 supra motors in to Hilux's so I guess it's possible. Sounds like a cool project. You might want to consider pushing the rear axle back and mounting your cab a little further back to minimise the fire wall chopping? (and get a better wheelbase)

Do lots of measuring before you start cutting and buying stuff.

Ive got a access to a really good workshop so the more cutting and fabricating the better

Id need to find out what the size difference between the td42 and zd30 to know what im really messing with here.

So you guys think it could be done? with the only major problem being the firewall?

It's not too bad.

Here is a short thread (with very little info but a few pics) of a mates one I had a lot to do with.

Feel free to ask if you have any specific questions about it. Quite a few people on here have done it so there is probably more than one thread on it.

Talk to your cert man before you start. That way you can start with the end in mind. Saves time, money and mental anguish.

That said. Should be fairly straight forward as both vehicle are made by Nissan. I'm putting a hilux cab on a Safari chassis and that is a little harder for cert. You may be able to do yours as a low volume vehicle, mine has to be done as a scratch build. Rego and wof are as normal once you have your cert. Bsed on the very little I know, budget $1000 for your cert. Be thank full if it's less, and no too gutted if it's more. Cert guy I talked to guessed $1200 for mine. That said, you never know till they start doing it.

have a look on http://www.navara.asia/ one of the guys has a d22 on a patrol chassis. (if you get an ad refresh the page, if you get a malware warning ignore it. not sure if the spam problem has been fixed.)

could always go with a 4 cyl fd42 or fd46t from an atlas, may well be a botup swap if the bells match

the issue you are going to have is firewall position in relation to the front axle axis, you will need to push the firewall back yes but the front body structure will need to go forward to position the arches over the axle. it maybe easier to fit the safari running gear to a navara chassi and use safari transfer on the back of the navara gearbox and engine.

unless the td42 IS turbod and tickled up a bit the power to wieght ratio would make a td27/qd32 or zd30 more efficent.
