Hey all,

I have a new problem

I have a strange squeling noise coming from either the Gearbox or Transfer Case (I think) when accelerating in 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Any ideas?

Also as I have a tooth missing on my reverse I might just replace the gearbox, any ideas where I could get a gearbox for a 1986 Nissan/Datsun 720 4wd (matting to a Z18 (s) 1770 sometimes reffered to as an L18), if not any ideas on what I would expect to pay for reconditioned one?

Oh and anyone know where I could get a front diff?

Bad timing dude. I got a mate in Ashburton who has a garage full of these, quite handy as I have an 84 720, unfortunatly he is in Aussie until end of September. If you are still looking then let me know.
As for the squeal, mine did it to, it wasn't the gearbox or transfere though, it was the p/steer pump belt. It was strange cos it only did it in 1st and 2nd.
Now that I think about it there is a guy around the corner with one sitting in his back yard.
(back yard wreaker) I can ask him what he wants for the front diff if you want, not sure whats in it or what the ratio is though. Think it's a petrol.

Cool Thanks, It could be power steering I've been having problems with the Reservoir leaking from the outlet hose and have been trying in vain to re-seal it, what happens when they dont have enough fluid??!?!?.... I'll check tommorow, strange thing is it sounds like its coming from somewhere around the transmission tunnel. Ahh well... I should really buy that 4wd hack I keep thinking about...

hi the easiest way to check this squel ( if you suspect power steering ) is to remove the drive belt to the pump ( this will not cause any damage ) and go for a test drive and if the noise is gone you know where to start looking ofcourse the steering will be heavy but this is a good way to check for power steering problems thanks pinky ps . keep me informed of the outcome .

Yep i'd buy another one if its for a toy, mine is only a work hack, the old diesels rattly as hell but seems to be very reliable.
The old 720's not much more than a car with ground clearance when it comes to 4wding

Well its not any of the belts, checked them all this morning.

But this evening is a different story... on my way back from Alex (to Wanka) the noise disapeared, then went kirch bang, clatter clatter..... and well the gearbox shat itself. :shock:

All the oil from the gearbox decided to exit through the now blown seal between the gearbox and bell housing (Clutch plates) . Managed to get most of the way home in 2nd by starting in 5th and working backwards, as clutch wasnt working, then a mate came out and towed me back with flashing yellow work lights & all... so if anyone say a huge Delta truck with all its lights going towing a truck, that was me. Oh and he decided to tow me round town too.... just for the embarassement factor... ahh well.... mates :roll:

So it looks like I'll be down the garage tommorow taking it to bits and seeing exactly what went wrong. Ahh well...

So first check the belts, if that doesnt solve the problem BEWARE.....

I'll let you know what the final outcome is once its in bits. but I suspect I need a new seal, maybe a new bearing?!?!? as I'm guessing theirs one in there somewhere...

ok well its the gearbox and the concencus is to buy a reconditioned one (2K+) which I can't afford so I'm looking for second hand ones... which I might just be able to afford....

So questions....

1. Any ideas on the price for a 2nd hand gearbox?

2. If I strip it down and work out whats buggered, would that be cheaper?/??

Well you have to take it out anyway and if your going to get another replacment just whip it apart because it won't matter. I'm guessing that a bearing seized and spun in the housing on one of the shafts or something similar. You'll soon see whats wrong when it's apart :wink:

Found a second hand 5spd, part no FS5W71B HF48. $200+freight.
Its in Oxford Nth Canterbury, its off a SD23 diesel, I'm not sure if they are the same, check the part no's and get back to me.

Well managed to spend a couple of hours on it today.... got the primary driveshaft off and the front driveshaft.... am stuck trying to take the exhaust off now.... damned bolt wont undo where the exhaust joins the manifold

ah well, gonna get a hacksaw onto it tommorow.

Had a chat with the dudes down the garage today (who are trying to price a replacement) and they say I have a non-standard gearbox.... hrm.... Any ideas on whether the part number is printed on it somewhere?

Will get you a part number as soon as I can find it

If it helps its a 5speed box matted to a Z18 1770 with a seperate transfer box.

The gearbox/transfere numbers are on the right inner guard by the fire wall if this helps.

Engine - Z18 (S) 1770

Trans - FS5W71B

Axle - HF48

Dunno haven't had to pull mine out yet, fingers crossed I won't have to for a while either.
I'll suss out the freight tomorrow.
I have been told that it takes longer to pull out the driveshafts than it does to pull out the gearbox. Is this true?

It looks like I need to take out the front diff too... thats makes:

Primary Driveshaft
Front Driveshaft
Exhaust
Transfer Case Rock Guard

hmm doesnt sound like much in list form.... ahhhh

PS: When I spoke yo local mechanic guru he said it'd be a nightmare and would take 1 1/2 days!!!!

So what you are trying to say is that by the time mine goes splat, you'll be an expert on the 720 gearbox and will come up and do mine

I spoke to a couple of truck companies this morning about freight and am waiting for them to get back to me, I'll phone them tomorrow if I haven't heard by then.

Oh bugger... so its in the truck!!!!! Hmm.... I wreckon in total it would take about 2 hours, if you had a properly equiped workshop, I've had problems with seized bolts, welded nuts all sorts... have had to cut two bolts so far....

I've found from experience that having a small gas plant saves so much time and stress. Bolts are cheap, shrinks arnt

I thought about that, but the worst bolt was next to impossible to get to.. I could only just get to it with a 10mm x 200mm saw blade... :shock:
