Have you removed the swaybar on your offroader?

Post by turoa »

A few of us in chat have been having a chat about swaybars. So... Do you still have them connected on your offroad vehicle? How much difference has it made to handling. Any reasons as to why you shouldnt remove them?

Any resons why you shouldnt remove them for offroad? (I have one)

Should you remove one and not the other?

Removed both on the paj - would not go back.

On road - pay some respect to posted speeds on corners, handling is "different"

Off road - big improvement in flex

only reasons I can see to leave it on, gen 1 pajero (pre 1990) WILL snap rear radius rods if the swaybar is removed.
Only other reason is when traversing a slope side-on you will get an extra 5 deg or so of lean. - could possibly be overcome by using isolated air shocks.

it makes a huge difference off road (on the zook anyways) it makes each wheel on the front flex individually instead of together (hence the one wheel in the air thing) makes it abit more floaty on the road....kinda like driving a couch down the street quite cool really 8)

I found that it "pulls" the vehicle back to the ground if it feels you're about to go over. Makes it more stable on sidelings too.

I have disconnects on the front and leave the rear bar in.

Having the front disconnected provides the extra travel I am after, the rear artics quite well with the bar in so I have left it.

With the rear it doesn't seem to tip over as much even with the front disconnected.

YMMV

Matt.

on my scudo removing the front sway bar made a heap of difference off road, on road it is a little more interesting to drive but worth it

My rear bar was removed without any effort on my part recently (broken sway bar bracket, a very common problem on the surf rear end apparently).

Nice increase in articulation, not so nice increase in bodyroll on the open road.

Mine was disconnected... broken sway bar bracket, much better off road and not much differnet on road. I was wondering if it is going to effect the WOF.

Removed sway bar on my 70 MWB - makes a huge difference off road. It rolls around a bit on road but i can live with that for the offroad improvement. Shed a bit of weight too!

its a good mod, I noticed the amount of extra vehicle lean negligable, but the extra off road articulation is alot

Took the front one off the Shorty and like Al says its great offroad with a small amount of xtra bodyroll.
On the artic ramp the rear was fully extended with the new shocks at max height and the swaybar wasn't really limiting anything  (maybe 60mm lift wasn't enuf) still for my newbie 4wd experiences it will do for now. 8)

Since the upgrades done on my 4x4 I'm looking at getting a swaybar fitted. It handles very badly.

I take mine (front only) off for big trips but its on the rest of the time. I've got standard suspension and even at that low height the truck handles like a pig with it off.
The SWB Prado is way more comfortable with the bar off when boulder bashing 9 hrs up a river bed.

Has anyone made disconnects up for a Prado? I would consider fitting the LWB rear bar then too if I could do this.

Funnily enough I've been hunting for an email I got sent about these. Someone makes them, just can't find their number...

on my 91 surf i have the rear one off. the other day i had to take the front off when doing clutch and left it off 2 see what it was like, think i will leave it out. i reckin that with both out is more predictable than with just the rear out. with a new set of shock mine was abit rough and now is smoother with the sway bar out. doesnt seem to corner much worse. and now allows the front to hit the bumpstops off road (woohoo another few mm of front articulation!)

I undid mine to see what it was like to drive on road.

1989 Isuzu bighorn with front corners that REALLY dip going round bends even at 40Kmh :!: :!: :!:

I wasn't keen to have a go at open road speeds so went for this instead :!: :!:

Image

Nice and cheap as chips as well, cost a whole $6.00 for the bits :!: :!: :!: lol:

Only problem I have, as can be seen from the photo, is due to the torsion bars being wound up it puts too much angle on the bolts due to the bottom arm angle :?: :?:

Hope those wet noddy gits making that '4wds are the devil' documentary showing on Thursday night don't see this thread..

People removing anti-roll bars from already roll-over prone old 4wds might not go down too well when subjected to typical media sensationalism.

You're right. They don't come out with any, but at that time the speed limit was only 80kph and the roads weren't as banked or as fast as they are now so...yeah. I do use my fj40 offroad alot, but I use it as my everyday hack as well. So I want a safer ride at 100kph. Bring on a sway bay! :salut:

Yeah bring on the SWAY BAY!!! :D

For those of you that don't know it's kinda like a slow vehicle bay, but for trucks without sway bars, basically it consists of really easy corners :D
