Hey guys! As on the newbies board im new as hell on here. My d21 td27 is blowing black smoke under boost. Been told to block of egr so going to commemce that soon! Maybe ill take heaps of pics as no one has sucessfuly done that, dont think ill be good at the write up part though haha
Anyway my question is will my mates standard 2.8 mu turbo be a decent upgrade or is it a bad size? Done abit of cross researching and a wrx td04 13g turbo aparently is a great upgrade which ill do if the mu turbo is shit haha
Thanks in advance!!

scooby turbo would be better suited, how ever the later Garrett turbo fitted to the TD27 post 97 is a good unit that will happily push 18 psi all day long.
black smoke under load /boost is usually a sign of too much fuel as apposed to not enough air, so i doubt there is anything wrong with the turbocharger you have.
start with the EGR block, intercooler and a good sized dump pipe and exhaust before messing with compressor ratio's and fuel. doesn't take much to melt a piston in a diesel if ya havent got it right.

Ah spot on advice already! perfect ive got a intercooler im going to custom fit but wanted to make one suit once i had a turbo on there thats gonna stay you know?
Mint, egr block is already on the cards
Is there a size that you could recommend for dump pipe and exhaust? Also the size you recommend will it also be suitable for the later model garrett?
Much appcreciated!

general rule for performance for jap engines is inch diameter per litre. obviosly exceptions to every rule but you can get away with 3 inch straight pipe exhaust at wof time. as the td27 is a quiet engine compared to most.

yep, that's all i run, aslong as it isn't too obnoxious basically, if you think it might be too loud, it probably is but the turbo makes a good silencer in itself.
question for you, your turbo charger does it look like this...
or this...
The first is similar to the Hitatchi turbo used on earlier TD27's and are prone to shaft breakages, they can't handle too much boost or excessive EGT's.
The second is what you find on the late TD27eti's/ and QD32 with top mount intercooler and is much more reliable with constant high boost situations.

Mines the first one man, will try get my hands on the garret one. Does it require any modification? Lines, manifold etc

No, they share the same fittings.

Hey managed to get my hands on a garret off the newer model engine. Found out though its got a bolt bolt flange that goes onto the exhaust manifold. Guy told me it would fit so i fucked up and didnt double check. Think its off a zd30 or something. Am i able to chuck the manifild for that engine onto the td27? Otherwise would this turbo run good cause i can modify my manifold for it to fit if itll run good on it. Turbo seems really good condition. Thanks in advance

got a pic of it? or any numbers off it? zd30 are hitachi turbo unless its a variable turbo which are garret. zd30 manifold won't fit a td27.

if it is hitachi like your original one you may be able to swap the exhaust housing/propeller if the cartridges are the same physically

Did some further research and asked a diesel mechanic and confirmed wouldnt fit so i ended up making my own flange and welded it to the manifold. Got everything back together but now got to deal with a high idle issue before i can give a review haha will post pics up soon!

not to hard to deal with high idle, pretty sure some one has akready turned up the wick on your fuel pump if at first you had black smoke and now high idle with new turbo.. they havent compensated by adjusting idle, just closed up spill valve.

so i tried adjusting the fuel screw and its still idling high, i dont have a vaccum line going to the wastegate either?

these are the vaccum lines that were connected to the egr butterfly etc, had them blocked off but took them out to show you whichs ones the the solenoids.

load it up to the likes of youtube then hotlink it using the youtube button above the text box... but you dont need to type in

It's not the spill valve/full load you are adjusting, as you close up the spill valve it will increase fuel pressure through out the RPM range including idle speed, so you need to adjust the idle screw down to compensate.

aw duh, yeah i was adjusting the full loard screw, is there a proper way of setting this as now it is probably out of wack, ill adjust the idle screw tomorrow and see if it helps, its a pig to start which youll see in thr video once uploaded trying to find the cure to that next :/ just want it going arrrrgh!

Should i be adjusting the ilde screw even if i never touched the idle screw prior to doing the injection pump?
Re: turbo swap!

yes, as the spill valve has already been played with, you need to compensate for it.

.Hey so when + turboing a td27 should you need to adjust the fuel screw on the injection pump? dont wanna burn any pistons out

IF it is a Naturally aspirated TD27 and using the N/A pump a quater turn max,
Since the N/A injector pumps don't have the diaphram on top to open/calibrate the needle valve in relation to the boost pressure more then 1/4 turn will result in excessive fuel and black smoke on idle and off boost.
basically the ultimate test is to find a steep grassy/muddy hill and try and drive up it with ya foot flat for a minute it'll do one of three things
either get really hot really fast from too much fuel
Start to loose power from fuel starvation
or do this.....
"the sweet spot" where the engine is under load and feathering the throttle but making maximuim power/torque right through the rev range.
When you get the engine sounding like that you know it's about right.
