well the bang wasn't that loud.. and fortunately did not involve any water.
there was a faint rattling sound for a few days, I dismissed it as a loose heat shield somewhere but it got louder on a long trip up to the buller gorge - it sounded very much like gears not meshing properly and brushing the teeth of one another.
I have recently taken the starter motor to bits to clean dirty solenoid contacts and I at first thought I may have put the ferrite rod in backwards holding the starter motor drive cog out slightly and the teeth were lightly brushing the teeth on the flywheel as the sound was coming from the bellhousing and could only be heard at idle and up to about 1200rpm (94 surf 1KZ motor with manual trans here folks)

Anyways this noise got louder as I was pottering around the music festival I was at and on the way out the main gate this morning came the rattle rattle BANG I was dreading... now the truck is driveable but only up to around 2500RPM then the transmission mysteriously loses its connection with the engine intermittently and the motor free revs until you drop back down past the 2500 mark and she takes up power again... there are no engine problems.

I suspect there is either a clutch problem or the dual mass flywheel (why toyota, WHY???) has done its dash and is falling to bits in there.
I am leaning more toward the flywheel problem as she behaves just fine at low RPM except for that cursed rattle and it would seem when the centrifugal force reached at 2500RPM causes the dual mass bits to fly out is where the problem is arising.. but this is just a guess I have never seen how one works.

Any support from you surf boffins out there would be greatly appreciated.. and if I'm going to take the gearbox off anyway I'm putting a solid flywheel on so if anyone knows where to get one of those in the south island I'll be your best friend.

Go to the top of the class --- you have got it in one--- Dual Mass flywheel.

Would you say the truck is safe to drive very gently around town until I can get one of those kits freighted over to Greymouth or is it likely to die completely on the main road and be left for the street kids to pick over in the middle of the night?
I phoned a mate of mine who blew one a while back just now and he said his was not driveable afterwards... might have to get the ol' mountain bike out... good thing town is flat.

Take yours out first and measure the clutch Toyota use two different sizes and depending on which bin they got yours out of it could be the 9" or the 9 1/2". As for driving it ---- I think the fact you have got your vehicle home, you have used up all your luck.
