Wanted Winch Fairlead Donut Style

Post by suzolla »

Hi,
What do people use for the round style fairleads for synthetic rope, and who sells them.

Other option is to make some.

Cheers

We have been using eye bolts, with a bit of cut and shunt as required

I've done then in Poly blank 100mm drill a hole in the middle and machined a bit of a entry.... to hold it to the bumper machine the outer to fit into a bit of pipe and just weld a bit to the bumper and smack the poly in... done
I use the poly because its alot cheaper than Uhmwpe (sp?)

I found them ages ago from some crowd in the uk. From memory they were cheaper than the link above. Can't seem to find them in 2 minutes now though. If you get on to some (at a decent price) you should bring some in.

Yeah I found a site a wee while ago. I ended up making mine or should I say a mate machined some up for me. I have a drawing somewhere but can't seem to find it at the moment. (Sketch)

Thanks for the replies, yes was thinking about lifting eyes, wondering if they would get rough with rust over time.
Landrover ones look good but getting up in price, especially with shipping. Will look for them in the US

I used some eyes for the runners in my playdoh... polished them up and had them electroplated.... So they wont rust. One of my donuts was made from stainless which is good but the other it seems is a steel so that one I will get plated. I get them nickle plated... Nice and hard and wont rust.

If you are after smallish lifting eyes, then get the male m12 stainless ones from your local ANZOR store. From memory they are not to dear. This is what I use for rope guides, but would need a much larger radius for a fairlead I think.

This looks good but I don't speak the language and they seem to be about $220 nzd.

This looks ok but not as good. $250 kiwi for a pair, plus freight. Not good enough for that price.

They're ok but a bigger radius is desirable. For deflections over 10 degrees the Samson rope manual recommends a minimum effective diameter of 3 times the rope diameter, with bigger being significantly better for rope life. So for 12mm rope I want at least and 18mm radius, and really I want bigger than that.

good to know, was going to use one for rear mounted winch, but will now use something else. see what the outcome of this thread is.
still be ok for a straightish line as a runner to front though aye? (already got one) 12mm rope.

Yep be sweet as for that.
As I said above I have just used the Anzor stainless lifting eyes as guides for slight angle changes, that fairlead will be even better.

I had some machined up in steel for about 50-60 each, look really good and socket straight into seamless pipe, cant show photo as truck away getting winches remounted.
Tim pm me if you want the name of the guy that did them.
