Hilux Ln106 Voltage Regulator

Post by tuscan »

Hi

I'm new here and I could do with some advice on my LN106 Hilux 1990 if possible please.

The vehicle has recently developed a "ticking" noise in the external bulkhead mounted voltage regulator like the contacts are activating. Several of the dash lights flicker at the same time.

The frequency of this is say about once every 2 seconds and only happens at idle or when not driving. If you rev the engine in neutral then the ticking increases frequency to about once a second. Once you drive away then it stops and will reappear when you come to a halt again (sometimes).

I have replaced the 660cca battery and I have checked the regulator by disassembling the unit cover - it is spotless inside no corrosion. All the connections from the regulator are clean and tight as are those from the battery and alternator. I checked the regulator resistances as per the manual and all we're close to spec figures (I assume within the range of accuracy of the cheapo circuit tester I was using).

Vehicle is fine in all other respects (charging, starting, running) etc.

Any ideas what my next step should be please and what the cause could be? Appreciate any help given.

Cheers

Tuscan.
