for the SAS on my 185 surf, I was planning on using a 130 surf steering box. but is an 80 series box going to be a better option? is it stronger? would a 185 pump run it? is the steering shaft angle and pitman the same? the bolting on part will be new holes so that's no biggie, as long as it all lines up.

80 box is way bigger and stronger.
Dont know about the rest.
would be my option and make the rest work to suit the box.
sime thing to think of is wheather a single v belt will be enough.
My sbc struggled on a single belt running a std l.c box but once i went to double belt it operated mint.
so much it could pull the rpm down to stall when the wheels were jambed up in ruts

Use the surf box. Way more common(cheaper). All the surfs, prados and 80 series run the same size sector shafts in their internals.
Only ones that are bigger are 105 series with solid front axle and late model 78 series onwards with solid front axle.
Just be wary of which way you want the pitman arm facing, 80 and prado hang out the front, and surf swings to the rear

with an 80 box and the pitman arm out the front hopefully that might help clear the panhard rod?

already got an 80 box so will hopefully work.
went into masterton Toyota yesterday, what a waste of time. all they would say is 'whats the part number'? the parts guy doesn't even know what shape a 70 series land cruiser is. I had to show him on the computer. mechanic wasn't much better.
trying to price 70 series steering for the SAS. all I could get out of them was just a drag link ( with ends) will cost $677 + GST!

must be cheaper than that going by what people have been saying on here.
is there a year 70 that would be the best steering? or some other option? for SAS 80 box prado diff housing surf hubs.
even better the part numbers.

got to watch what parts you mix and match, the 70 series tierod ends (leaf sprung 70 series not prado)are too big to fit the 80 series pitman arm you'd have to put a 70 series pitman arm on the 80 box (same size shaft/spline they interchange), the 70 series leaf sprung tierod and drag link are about 50 bucks each complete with ends if you get the right toyo part number

Nice one Derk!
Yeah Hamilton Toyota weren't much more helpful (years ago now). They didn't believe that I want these parts for my Hilux. Was like getting blood from a stone. Had to pre pay for them before they would order etc etc.

is there a cheaper part number for this or does $175 + gst sound right from Toyota?
