thinking outside the square.

on my vzn185 with SAS.

does anybody know, without it costing heaps, if its possible to run a hilux/surf dual transfer case setup and keep the two front outputs? one on left one on right

using 185(left output) and 130(right output) transfer cases, the 185 to run pto, and the 130 to run front diff.

maybe not worth looking at. any ideas?

You would need a fancy pants adaptor that I don't think anyone makes and it would make things way too long as well.

Why would you want to?

if the objective is to run a pto you might want to look at running a prado box with split transfercase you can bolt a cruiser pto straight onto the side

just thinking of something different. pto and reducing gearing in one go.

what prado is that off? manual? fix up to the vzn185? A343F trans.

can you use a pto with auto trans?

Unsure about the smaller hilux trans but the lc transmission has a brake in the shifting mech that stops the auto from idle revolving and allows the use of reverse to then be used to winch out.
Thus with a maneulised box you can use all gears for winch in. But of course it will still come down to first gear to winch and drive

how easy would it be to fit up to the 185 V6? and how hard is it to get one? what model lc are they from? 70?

being supercharged it would be nice to have a stronger lc tranny.

No idea on bolt pattern
The lc60 series is your best bet to find the auto.
They did come out in the mid 1980s 70 series as well but a lot rearier.
If you have a bellhousing then most welcome to put it up against my one to sort out any differances.
Btw mines not for sale
Vx80 1990/91 also come out in part time 4x4 they used the same auto from the 60s. But a lot rearier again
Search for fj60 auto. Good luck

if your going down that road it would be far easier to dump the thirsty underpowered and under-rated toyo V6 and find an early 4.0l lexus engine, a prado auto and split transfercase will bolt straight up to it and the pto output will be all ready to go :D , other than all the wiring all you'll have to do is new engine and trans mounts and get some driveshafts made up, its an old conversion that's been around for a long time now there's no shortage of info on google :D

Its definately a cool idea. I have been looking into a similar setup to run dual cases on the Nissan platform. The idea I had been toying around with is to use a Patrol transfer as the primary box, then hard mount a divorced case from a Datsun 720 on the back of it. It would need to be clocked slightly but I dont think that would create any problems.
Then obviously run the front differential from the 720 case, and figure out a way of using the front output on the Patrol case to drive a PTO. Or just utilize the existing PTO output on the Patrol case.

I have been weighing up the pros and cons VS just running low range gears in a single t-case. I think having multiple ranges would be the ultimate, but the cost would be added weight of the second case and crossmember and the expense in making up new driveshafts. Another benefit would be having the transmission brake handbrake, albeit on the primary case.

Since the Toyo has the same wheelbase as the Nissan - 104ish inches, I dont think there would be an issue with rear driveshaft length. All speculation at this stage though...

will start looking. thanks.

are you thinking of the thirsty underpowered 3.0 V6 or the cheaper to run more (still not heaps) powerful 3.4 V6? 3.4 supercharged surely will keep up with a 1UZ.

would the prado bolt up to the 3.4 V6. doesn't the 3.0 V6 trans bolt up to a 1UZ? not sure about the 5vzfe.

isn't that where great ideas start?

The 1uz auto is part of a family that is used in a lot of other Toyota and other models. You can often swap the bell housing and torque converter and sometimes pump to connect to the 1uz

what I need to know is if an auto from a fj60 or a prado or something that has a pto output & front drive shaft on the right would bolt up to the vzn185 3.4 V6. whatever bell housing. its an A343F trans now.

Should do. Google the 78 series Prado auto. It will be the same family. Should be able to swap bell housing and torque converter and input pump

kzj78 has the same trans code, or at least some of them do. do they all have pto output?

neither of those would be centre output for rear drive shaft aye?

Nope both are drivers side outputs
Interesting hearing that the smaller trans will take the split transfur box.

Off hand the outputs are around 6" to 8" offset

Imho run the offset t.box if it works and change rear diff if drive shaft vibration becomes an issue

that's what I was thinking. when got the money look at rear prado/? diff. get the SAS sorted first.

did any of the prado/cruiser rear diffs with offset centre, with coils, have disc brakes?

Lc diffs are to big.
Unsure of prado but disc converstion aint hard.
Plenty of lads here would know lots more than me

sounds good. will get rest done and look at that sometime with a prado diff.

the Lj7x and KZJ7x Older prados are all disc brakes with integral drum for the handbrake...

if you keep your eyes out for a cheap prado with a blown 2lte or 1kz engine you'll have a donor chassis already complete with F&R coil springs, front SAS, prado trans and transfercase with pto output and rear diff centred correctly for the trans output, only downfall would be the severe lack of articulation prado radius and trailing arms have

that would make sense. problem is 'cheap' probably isn't that cheap being prado. would mean less work though.
