1kz Cracked head.

Post by mike »

finally got the head off the toyota and found just a few cracks......14 in total. 12 were in the injector chamber inserts so not really an issue, although one extended into the head itself  2 were on number 3 and 4 between inlet and exaust

So off I went to toyota and got a new head and gaskets for $1200 and down to the cryogenics man (after hearing that new aussie that suggested this forum rav about them and doing a bit of research on the net about it). so for $1500 I'll get a brand new toughened head back on the surf. I also just bought an intercooler off a wrx locally (wasnt the cheapest but it will do - $150) to keep the intake temps down. Will get the radiator flushed and possibly recored to a 4 core and will try to get them to make some guides so I can slot a piece of real-estate board or thin tin/sheet metal down in front of it to stop mud getting in (really hard to clean the surfs with all the air con in front with out removing the radiator).

to get the intercooler on the top of the engine it looks like i may have to do a 2" body lift 8)

After all this I should have a hopefully a strong engine again :afro:

sounds like a good investment getting it "Cryo" , I was thinking about doing similar with the body lift to get a Hiflow bar and plate WRX intercoooler above the engine as its the shortest route for the compressed air to go , so more instant . But worried about airflow thru the rocker cover side of the intercooler, as the faster air moves from one side to the other and no restrictions , the cooler the charge temp .

So when the time comes after my fresh blue printed motor in the next few months , will build a Water/air intercooler( similar design to a few drag cars i have seen ) and put it next to the intake side front passenger side gaurd with all heat sheilding to keep it cool .

Mike >>so what WRX intercooler do you have , the Bar & plate( after market ) or tube & fin ( stock black one or STI ) ? what turbo have you got ?

have fun

I've just picked it up, its the STI tuned one (written on it) non painted strait ali. Just the normal turbo that comes with a 1kz.

Will definitly need to be doing a body lift to get this on 8)

HI mike -

Any idea on why the head cracked - I know they do it but do you recall it getting hot or anything?

Yup, I completely cooked it last xmas/new years trip and its taken till this long to give up the ghost. I had just done whitcombe road (famous for blocking radiators and killing engines) and was down near piano flat climbing away from the small creek and looked down at the temp gauge and the needle was no where to be seen, thats how far it was off the scale! Wasnt a pretty sight thats for sure

Word of advice when putting the head back on. GET NEW HEAD BOLTS!!!!!

They don't have a torgue setting as you probably know. You do them up to something like 25 foot pounds, then turn them all 90 degrees, and then do them all again another 90 degrees. As a result you cant retorque them again. When we did the head on Dwaynes surf, we tried to use the old bolts, and snapped one on the first 90 degrees tightening.

Also, if you do it like we did, and assemble the head as much as possible on the bench, with intake manifold and egr etc etc, make sure the injector lines are connected to the injectors and routed in their proper place on the intake manifold. Its a bitch to thread them up through the intake manifold when the heads bolted on.......

You mean you had the head off and you didn't take the oppertunity to completely remove all traces of the Evil Gas Recirculation system?

Well one year after she went in the garage (25th of november it went sizzle pop)

Head is back on, new 4 core radiator and electric fan.

Took it up worsleys hill road section (where i used to start to climb on the gauge ) and pushed it all the way up at 50km/hr on the steep bit at the needle didnt budge at all. Very happy.

Next test towing the LR up worsleys
