spare wheel carrier SURF

Post by wootwoot »

hey guys, after now putting new mud tyres on my 97 surf, i also have one as a spare on the boot!, on the tyre rack!, however everytime i go over bumps even on the road!, it keeps rattling quite loud and banging around, i put foam between the bar and the boot which helped a bit!, but it has gotten worse again since..
has anyone els had this issue?! and know how to fix it without having to mount the tyre under the truck, or on the roof haha
look forward to hearing suggestions too! thanks

why does it rattle?
the 185 series surf has a tongue on the swing arm that locates very solidly into its latch. I have only ever seen one that was very worn and sloppy, but it is not real common. So what on yours is really worn or loose?
Is the tyre somehow touching the rear door?

It's very common for the carrier bushes to flog out. Basically you need to grind the ends of the pin off, fit bronze bushes and new pins or unbrako bolts. Lengthy process.

On my 40 series I got a inner tube put it between the boot and the spare tyre rack and pumped it up

not the neatest fix but cheap easy and it worked perfectly
