Nissan Motor Dimensions
Hi ORE, does any of you nissan junkies know the overall dimensions of the Nissan TD42 engine. Im playing with the idea for a possible engine swap in a safari from the TD42 to Cummins 6BT and need to know what differences in wiggle room I'll be working with.
Cheers
Cheers

Basically 930 oa long
500 wide
830 high
Measurements are over all as it sits in the engine bay

6BT is a heavy-arse engine

Re: Nissan Motor Dimensions
Wiki states 1100pd dry
The specs on the page may well work
440ft/pds and 220hp will definitely push the old wagon along

Cheers for that mate. Was waiting for the truck to come back (father using it) and was gonna get in there with a tape measure lol.
Yeah the 6BT is heavy, maybe 500kg fully dressed, but thats only 50, maybe 100 kg heavier than the TD42 fully dressed. She may sag on the springs but stiffer springs would fix that. I'm just not too sure how well the stock manual trans would hold together behind it? I will also need to manufacture an adapter plate.....
Re: Nissan Motor Dimensions
I know 6bt and 4bt Cummins are fairly common diesel engine conversion on 80s in the states because they only ever got petty version (fj80)
So should fit in a patrol

Yeah, and I've got a bit of experience with them. Used to have a 32" Bertram and she had two of em in her. Used to cruise at 24 knots in slight seas - good strong motors. The 6BT is roughly 1016L/633W/963H, while, as above the TD42 is about 930L/500W/830H. I have plenty of room to fit it in, but it'll be a little cramped in there....
But I'll do the manual conversion first I think. But with the move to Kerikeri looming, I think the project will have to wait until the new year

Re: Nissan Motor Dimensions
Just went and had a look with a tape measure. The 6BT will fit in, but wont have room for a mechanical fan behind the radiator. Only 40mm too long. All other dimensions are fine though. I could remount the radiator foward by that distance possibly?

Manual trans will handle it fine..they use it in Civilian buses plus the Aussies and some kiwi's are pushing anywhere from 190rwhp to 280rwhp through the drivetrain.

Re: Nissan Motor Dimensions
Move the radiator and keep your manual fan
I've found out that the manual fan moves way more air than any electric will do.
The m.f. is always pushing air past the motor helping to air cool the motor before the temps get high enough to switch the electric fans on.
This is something that the electric fans really fail at

I know the Civilians use the TD42 engines but I never knew they had the FS5R50A, But that makes sense now - the low gearing comes from the diffs. Thats good to know, I'll just need a heavier duty clutch.
Good to know about the mechanical fan. When moving the radiator I may have to raise it or lower it a little to suit the height of the cummins fan. I guess the height of the fan is dependant on the mounting height of the motor - which has to marry with the bell housing on the trans. Should be a piece of cake. I'd imagine the hardest part of this would be the power steering, AC compressor and the rebuild of the exhaust. My current exhaust runs alongside the left chassis rail, but the cummins exhaust flange is on the right hand side. In saying that, that wont be too hard either.

Cool.
Cool yeah when in the US my Dodge friends used to say that the Cummins engine was the only good thing about the truck

So I take it you'll be going with a 12 valve?

Re: Nissan Motor Dimensions
yeah I'll go with the 12 valve. The 24 valve is more modern with a different computer. I'm not very familiar with it and its weird and strange to me. Also isn't the 24 common rail?
Re: Nissan Motor Dimensions
Yeah I think some of them were common rail, though apparently the early 24v ones had a shithouse injection pump that was very problematic.

Re: Nissan Motor Dimensions
one of the reasons I'm going for a later model 12v. They went to the Bosc P7000 pump which, if my memory serves me right, feeds higher pressure fuel through the injectors, and was from all accounts better than the one it replaced. Can't remember what its called.
Re: Nissan Motor Dimensions
Given the reputation of the Safari drivetrain..I don't think you'll encounter any problems as long as you use a good heavy clutch
Just search youtube for 6BT Patrol..pretty safe to say it fits too

Yeah, I climbed under the hood with a tape measure and itll fit fine in terms of height, may need to move some elec stuff for the width, but will need to remount the radiator forward by about 55mm to fit in the fan.
Re: Nissan Motor Dimensions
Yeah I think you can jig it around and get it to mount infront of the radiator brace instead of behind, probably have to use bonnet pins tho as the bonnet latch is likely the only thing in the way. I know its a common mod to jam a 6cyl in a Hilux. Maybe watch a lot of YouTube vids might get some ideas how others have made it fit..and it sounds cool too haha

Re: Nissan Motor Dimensions
early days mate. Currently down in cambridge and moving to Kerikeri area. Spending all my $$ on the move, then need a new boat for the christmas holidays in the bay. But as soon as I get back from that holiday Im swapping in a FS5R50A manual trans and a front locker, then going to look at this 6BT project. Then a 3" suspension lift to allow some more clearance between the new sump and the front diff. Also for the asthetic purposes too.... And when the next WOF comes around I'll be wanting two new tires and I'm thinking of replacing my four Desert Duelers with 32" Maxxis Buckshots. Not sure yet - I may just get the two new duelers and buy some time 'till I go for them.....
Either way, I'll finish this all hopefully by August if the funds allow!!!!!! Looking foward to the end result

Re: Nissan Motor Dimensions
Have seen on Aussie forums both duramax and 6bt Cummins conversions and apart from the cost it seems they are easy enough to do. Don't seem to overly stress the rest of the drive train either.
Re: Nissan Motor Dimensions
The Duramax conversions usually have the Allison auto transmission fitted as well. That's a WHOLE NEW POWER LEVEL lol
