Anyone removed complete erg on this model surf? Any engine fault codes come up? Had some smoke issue and blocking the vacuum pipe stops that but thinking of removing whole thing.
Also getting a High pitched humming once warmed up more noticeable at low speeds and thinking its probably a vacuum leak somewhere. Trouble is only happens sometimes being hard of hearing I'm finding it hard to track down

Cheers

hey Wattsy, have you got access to a decent air compressor? If you get creative you can pressurise the system with air(while the truck is not running, so the hissing air escaping is more easily heard.) if you still can't hear it, spray everything you suspect with a detergent/water mix, whilst you have it pressurised, and escaping air will blow bubbles or froth up.
it's best to use a air pressure regulator to keep pressure under 30 psi, so you don't pop hoses and clamps off.

You might need to remove the butterfly. It closes at idle so more EGR is drawn through but with the EGR blocked it generates heaps of vacuum and sucks oil in from somewhere (maybe valve stem seals).

I blocked my Pajero EGR and had lots of blue smoke at idle which cleared when driving. Couldn't remove the butterfly on it as it threw a fault code so I reconnected the EGR but I think the 1KZ is different.

Maybe someone else has had more experience with this engine.

It depends which type of intake you have. Most of them are the dual butterfly type, and there is a lot of info out there regarding this. Mine is one of the later drive by wire motors (99) and it only has one large butterfly, which I haven't removed as it also performs shutdown duties and engine retardation/braking duties, which I don't want to do without.

I've had my EGR blocked off for 3 years now.

Sorted that high pitched hum by doing some searching on the web, might be useful to others, pasted in the details below

on top of the injector pump is a banjo bolt on the fuel return side which contains a spring loaded ball valve. the spring weakens causing the ball bearing to resonate. i removed the bolt and took the ball and spring out. then i stretched the spring slightly and replaced. the spring is similar to that inside a ball point pen. put it all back together again and hey presto!

it's hard to believe that this could cause such a whistling noise coming up through the footwell but it does (did).

i take no credit for solving this. i went to an australian forum which put me onto a U.S. forum then to a south african forum to get the answer!!
