"Why not" project SWB LJ71 start of ongoing proje

Post by adventures_more »

Been tossing up to whether i should slowly build this 89' SWB landcruiser into a Little beast of a 4x4 that i bought 6 weeks ago , comes down to $$$ , the time & not having a garage set up as recenlty moved here from Aussie .

I have some photos of it coming soon, daily driver at the moment , you may have already seen it around CHCH , it has a 2L-T that blows smoke under power ( rings or cracked piston ) & drive train with a bearing noise , thinkn Transfer case .Today just had a look at a heavy duty 5sp & transfer ( same t/case as mine )out of a series 60 .

So "Why NOT"

The 1st stage plan >>

Fresh'n the 2-LT so can drive around & not get picked up by the blue brigade & until its ready for the "BiG" week ( swapping in the new engine & driveline combo ) ...

Rebuild this heavy duty Box & t/case that i pick up next week, then trace a 13BT or 14BT as a rebuilder core "you seek and you shall find ", rebuild & blueprint it with quality parts & custom low compression forged pistons with gapless rings , cryo entire bottom end & heads after machining , etc.

then will yank out 2L-T and drop this combination in & run them in gradually before the power is increased sunstantially ( BB turbo's , LPG injection , air/water intercooler, oil coolers & filters , etc )

Cool! I wouldn't waste my time on the POS 2L-T though, if you keep an eye out you should be able to pick up a good 13BT for less than the cost of getting inside a 2L-T.

Cheers

13BT 3.4L out of a BJ74 Landcruiser

Would probably need to be rebuilt due to bore wear.

The engine has been partially dismantled with the head and # 4 piston being removed. Otherwise it is complete.

Comes with everything except turbo and exhaust manifold.

I have been looking on the web for info about these motors a but can't seem to find much at all , i have a new "max ellery -landcruiser worksop manual" but has no photos , and rebuilding process but not much else on them - bugger ! do you know if the 13BT a direct injection ?- thats what i am seeking . think i need to go have a look at one thats been pulled down somewhere to see if it has the build strength & design to what i am seeking , don't want to buy one & to find out otherwise eh !

I just joined the CHCH Library yesterday and borrowed a BIG 650 page book on Diesels, was up to 1am last night reading some of it , the amount of stuff in there would blow your mind away, learnt heaps more about different systems, for example there's about 6+ different types of oiling systems in common diesels , i did'nt that there were such things as coolant filters around , theres an incredable amount of info in there- heaps about filteration & cooling systems, even covers water injection , aftercoolers/intercoolers ,forced induction , etc, etc - take ages to read it & re-read it ( think its purposelly for Diesel mechanics/Engineers, etc )

My Opinion is that "you can't effectively mofidy something , unless you know precisely how it works"- theory is in session now . funny eh !

Doing this 2JZ conversion, I've probably done over 60 hours worth of reading and research..

Best to research everything first so everything else will be easy... but you always miss something :)

I agree , the amount of times i try to be prepared for something and then i miss something small that puts a stop to it until i can get it or do it - just makes you ever more prepared for the next time around .

I am just really fussy now with engines , etc . Kinda have a engine building Hobbie , always reading new info about different techniques from magazines like "Engine masters in the USA" , "Zoom" , fast fours & Hot fours in Aussie, technical blueprinting books, etc , etc - You can never have too much information/Knowledge i reckn.

Toll TranzRail/TranzLink would be the cheapest. Where is it?

Depot to depot would be best..

Cheers,

Put a Post up in Off Topic, see if someone like DieselBoy or Wopass will pick it up for you and drop it to a freight depot... would only cost a few beers :)

Hmmmmm, i shipped four 33" tyres and rims down to Chch for Daz, we used Moveit Depot to depot. Cheap as.

Get the dimensions of the engine and weight and its destination and give them a call. I can take it to the depot if need be, but you woild think the seller could do that for ya.

You'll need to get the guy to pinch a pellet and pay him for a couple of cheap tie downs and it'll be right as rain to ship

When i did the tyres through moveit, i just dropped them off there at the depot and they threw them on a pallet and strapped it down.

I can get a pallet if needed. The seller can get the tie downs, and provided he's there to help me get the bloody thing on the trailer, i could pick up this weekend and take it to the depot on Monday.

cheers for the offer ,if you could do it in a week or 2 , i'll shout you a Carton or a slab as we Aussies call it .

Funnly enough the gearbox & t/case i was going to buy turned out to be more hassle to get it to fit as it came behind a 2H , the guy i am buying this 13BT said he has the gearbox & t/case that was behind the engine and offered it at a good price , i could'nt say "No" as it saves alot of hassle looking around for one to suit and he has a spare pallet at his place too & has an engine crane ( starting to sound too good to be true ), only problem is that its still in his truck , plus will have to wait a week till i get payed to pay the extra for the G/box & T/case ( moved over here from Melbourne 3 months ago & did'nt know anyone , paying for this & paying for that )

things are starting to happen for my LJ71 build , gathering parts as i go . I have the intercooler i plan to turn into a water/air version , today i won a bid on ebay for a wicked "Garrett GT25 VTN turbocharger that comes with a controller , i plan to trace another and run 2 of them thru custom turbo manifolds that i will design that will go on this 13BT that i will build , started buying a few digital micrometers as they are more precise . have to get the 13Bt rebuilder core sent down from Hamilton and start on that , will do the head 1st and modify the stock rockers to roller rockers ( needle bearings ) & runs aftermarket & lighter valvetrain .

it was off trademe , but one of those people who mispelt one of the critical words and left other stuff out , so Bugger all people will see it & any other stuff , unless you do a complete general search on trademe or ebay for " 4x4" or "Toyota" and search the whole lot. I do this now when ever i am lookn to buy a certain something and the amount of stuff you get really cheap is amazing - ( my 2 cents worth )

oh yeh , will be selling my now 2LT , gearbox & t/case really cheap later this year ( couple hundred the whole lot ) as will habe a new Combo in there & have a big grin on my face !

I bought a 14B for the parts awhile ago as will be going ahead with a stroker 13BT ( 14B crank ) in the coming months , was thinkn of turning the 14B into the turbo version , but already had a 13BT & save the hassle as 13BT is a complete rebuilder , 14B crank is in mint condition , plus will use other parts ( flywheel , front covers , power & vacuum pump's , etc ).

Plus have a H55F & transfer case ( with PTO ) for it . lookn at gettn a pair of LSD's for both diffs , just have to find 2nd hand ones & rebuild them or maybe Powertrax "No slip " lockers .
