Hi all this will my built thread!
LN65 double cab sitting on standard 31s wellside Bighorn meshes that are terrible in construction and comfort one plastic snorkel and a terrbile front bumper
the engine was a 2.4 from a 91 hilux i was told by the previous owner after a year or so i got sick of looking at the oil bubbling from the radiator an swaped it for a 5L from my pall Ricky at Chaney automotive on an site note him and bill are they guys in the know about VX cruisers an general 4wd etc had heaps of solid advice an knowledge from them and are always keen to help out
along the way there i installed a body lift of 50mm that i got for free from the guy that owns the "tonka" surf butchered the front bar to mount a winch on multiple times untill it worked also made my own flatdeck that was great for a while but after last weekend the 11th of october ive had enough of getting stuck due to mod cons needed in daily road use.

Plans for my truck
Rears up front move the front axle forward 50mm to correct approach angle and allow the tires to clear the footwell(most fabrication ill do myself)
Build a new tube frame bumper and exo to follow
extended shackles will be a must along with springs
mounting the winch under the deck with it coming out the front like the older landys
chopping the chassis down to the back of the spring perches
fabricating the deck to accommodate 4wd accessory's and spare and work in with the exo
ditch those darn recaros for some better bucket seats
axle trussing and Armour ! switching the 4.8 diff heads i have for 4.3lsd units
Rear mounted battery for the winch to draw from
33' tyres or 35' haven't decided

Im looking to build this truck up for trips to the coast around New Zealands beautiful rivers this isnt pure off road
Cheers Ray pics to come

you have 4.8 in there now? and your going to put 4.3 in & go from 31s to 33s or 35s?

That sounds a bit backwards

4.3 would be stronger than 4.8 being a lower ratio meaning more meat per tooth etc?

I think each tooth will be the same size but there will he less force on each tooth due to the pinion being larger so probably will be stronger.

The problem will be your gearing is going the wrong way, with larger tyres you need to lower the ratio to keep the engine in its sweet spot. If you go to 4.3 you will loose torque at the tyres. You can counteract this by increasing the engine torque or changing the gearing in the gearbox (hard to do).

Generally if we increase tyre size we lower the diff ratio to counteract the loss of torque. I don't think you'll notice the loss of strength with you engine and tyre size.

My guess is that it will he slow but exceptionally strong.
Looking at it. It looks like it drives a sproket simalar in size to the drum diameter.
Tie it well to the chassis as it could well pull the whole tray off otherwise.

Certainly jealous of a $15 eco shop winch.

Also your main winch looks more like 2 times 20 to 1. Which would be 400 to 1. Most PTO winchs are high than 20 to 1 (usually 27-32 to 1) and they have a whole engine to drive them.

Thanks for the pics. Does the winch have a brand or model or anything?
