Safari Cat Converter

Hey guys, what are the legalities in NZ regarding the catalystic converters and mufflers? I want to remove the converter from my 92 Safari TD42. I have a turbo with a 3" exhaust. Not sure of the legalities of removing the converter, also I've heard of guys removing the muffler as well. Whats that all about?

I doubt they had cat converters mate, they are a diesel truck engine which fall under diesel truck engine emission regulations from the early 90's...which in the early 90's wasn't much regulation so i'd say it is more then likley a muffler.

but even if it is a catalytic converter, by all means chop the shit out it shouldnt be there.

Cheers for that mate, I was surprised when I saw it but when I had the scuff plate off the bottom of the trans (this plate also hides a section of exhaust) I saw the converter. I wonder if its possible the guys put it in when they did the 3" exhaust when the turbo went in. They did a few strange things when I had the turbo put in and I've since had to replace the turbo due to their funky setup.

EDIT: that thing sounds mean!! Should still be under the 95dB cap on our exhausts surely.......... <lightbulb>

yep, turbo does a nice job of silencing it, it's loud, but not obnoxious unless your foots flat to the floor.

Dumb question, but you sure its a CAT, not just a flexi joint in the exhaust system?

Dumb question, but even dumber answer. Yes, it is a flexi joint. after reading that I went out and crawled under in the cold gravel with a torch, now I feel like a dumbass.

Will definately be looking into the muffler though. Sounds like fun....
