shock length

Post by yourlocalheadhunter »

I have a ln106 hilux with 2" body lift and have just fitted a 2" suspension lift. Im hoping to fit 2" extended shackles also.

I have shocks that came with my kit but i feel they will restrict travel off road, Im hoping some can give me the best to work out what length shocks im going need.

Also looking into inverting rears for more articulation

cheers

After installing all the new suspention components

Support vehicle on the chassis with a wheel off to allow easy measuring.

Use jack to take weight of axle and remove shock
Release jack and lower axle to allow springs to full travel
This will be maximum shock extention
Now jack up axle so it takes load off chassis.
The target is to fully compress spring so the bump stop is taking load
You may need to support axle at top of jack stroke and reset jack as normally it will not start to bottom out until the other wheel starts to lift off the ground.
Once you have the bump stop taking lloa this is the fully compressed stroke.
Now that you have the two measurement search for a shock that suits.
Remember that the new shock on minimum stroke can not be longer than your measurement. If it is then on bottom out stroke the shock mounts will take load and rip them off

If leaf spring was to touch bump stop it would be 335mm. With chassis jacked up extended drop is roughly 555mm.

This is with no shocks in the vechile also no tourqe arm? Will that make a difference?

Torque arm stops diff from rolling so no bearing on shocks

So what you are after is a shock that is 330mm compressed and extends to 555mm or there abouts
Extended lenght is nominal.
To short and will hold axle up a little. No problem
To long and spring will fully extend. No problem

If the compressed lenght more than 330mm then the chassis mount will need to be altered acordingly

I reality the torque arm actually does limit the down travel a bit, on the drivers side at least.

the shocks that came with the lift kit measure front 348mm compressed and extended 484mm. Im curious how they work these measurements out though as it will restrict the suspension badly if i fit these?

The shock compression length is too long and you risk the chance of bottoming out your suspension and damaging the shock as it won't compress short enough to match your suspension compression. Results in a dead shock. You could space your bump stops down 20mm to match the shock compression.
You will also lose some of your suspension droop as the shock is shorter than what your suspension can extend to, Being too short on extension is not as damaging to your shock but way less than ideal.
Having said that, if your 4wd never left the road the shocks you have would be ok. But if you have to go through a certification you will be failed on your shock lengths.
My advise, buy the correct shocks to match your suspension.
