Has any one got a few details about it? Length, estimated time to do the trip, start and finish points etc would be great. Me and a few mates would like ta go for a trip to have a look but need some details for planning purposes.

Thanks
Cole

Cole, google it. You will find entry and exit points. Its approx 46km long. There is plenty of youtube footage to give you an idea. I'm told the stream crossings can vary widely, depending on recent rain, or not. Rock base, rather than mud, from what i can tell.

Cool thanks guys. I did some googling but was a bit light on info about 4wds, kept coming up with biking and walking track information. Watched a couple of videos and it looks like a good trip. Thanks again

Doc would close it to 4x4 at any chance given also why I suspect the deliberate lack of info on any given site.

Standard 4wds can do the main track.

It is called the 42nd traverse after the 42 and state forestry block it was used for to log all the native. Most of the trees from that block went to the sawmill at national park where the kapoors road end went to Taupo etc. Couple of guys in our 4x4 club logged out of there in there late teens and the national park mill is now owned by mitchpine Levin.

national park mill closed quite a few years ago , tongariro water is in there now with their water intake and bottling plant.the traverse is not a hard track to do but at the same time there is quite alot of drop offs where you wont be getting your vehicle back in a hurry, just need some common sense and youll be sweet, limited cell reception, if going from owhango end just watch out for mountain bikers as they dont need to obey any basic road rules and can be anywhere on the track at any speed, place is riddled with 1080 so becareful with dogs. from kapoors rd end 2nd river crossing is the main one to watch for, if unsure walk it first ,if the tongariro national park has had lots of rain the waione will be up.

Hi did the 42nd on 1st Feb was fantastic .Track was very overgrown and had to do a lot fo bush bashing with truck now very scratched. It has some good big ruts and a couple of small mud holes but not bad. This was my first 4wd trip with one other truck and it had plenty of good stuff to keep us on our toes.Well worth the trip.We finished at the Owhango end this seamed to be the best way to go.We met four groups of mountain bikes and two quads gut had no problems passing. Will be doing it again.

Advice from DoC today

"I can now confirm that as of Monday, 7 March 2016 the entire 42 Traverse track will be closed to all 4WD vehicles. LUVs and ATVs will be able to access the track from the end of Kapoors Road to ‘Canyon Lookout’. We are recommending that LUVs and ATVs do not continue beyond the lookout for safety reasons, until repairs are carried out."

The media release should be out Monday or Tuesday next week.
