mid mount pto winch

Post by 4x4rookie »

Has anyone mid mounted a pto winch on a Nissan Safari/Patrol (off course they have) and have any pictures or advice.
I've got the rear facing pto drive required to drive it but any advice/pictures would be a great help on building/fitting the rest.
cheers

I've got mid mounted pto
It's sitting behind passenger seat ie in foot well area of what was rear seat
Very happy with setup
The challenge is building cradle
Small area cut in floor for drive side of winch and simply shortened the drive shaft and still used the mid shaft rubber bearing support
Can put up pics tomorrow night

try searching out mainland winch challenges and you might find a bit of info about how he set this one up, looks like a cruiser or something else winch under there? I don't know the truck only seen a bit of footage of it on SI winch challenge youtube clips.

Cool pics Cray. I assume from these that your truck is still full bodied?

Ever had dramas with your rope running so close to the exhaust? or is it not as close as the pic makes it look? (looks like it touches?).
Mine used to run close, maybe 40 mm air gap, that never had issues.

4x4 Rookie. My snippet of advice is try to have 900mm between you winch and your first rope guide. That way your rope will always lay on beautifully. You could probably get away with only 700 or 800 for the width of a Saf drum.

I know guys who used to break a lot of Nissan PTO's but as soon as you rear mount them they load up on the opposite side of the housing and are a bunch stronger, can't remember if they broke one after they rear mounted it.

Yes full bodied swb gq
Winch tube hard against exhaust both both wrapped and have no heat issues
Agree with your 900mm, it's what I'm about to do as the 500-600mm isn't enough to fully spool across width of drum. Couple more pics as I've got a Runva mounted on other side
The added bonus of moving winch, bats etc back is the front now sits an extra 25mm higher.

What did you make your front rope guides out of? Or where did you buy them?
