185 surf airbag removal

I am removing the airbags from my 1996 vzn185, have removed passengers one but when you turn the key nothing, plug it back in and vehicle goes.
I can't find the airbag/srs fuse, does anyone know where it is? would removing that allow vehicle to start?
I've a feeling there is a separate computer for the airbags, is it just pull all that out?

The srs controller will be under the center console of forward of it under the heater box, just unplug it but that will bring the light on on the dash. Also check if you have pretensioners on the seatbelts and if you do you may need to change them.

cool, that's what I was after.

yeah I've got some 130 belts to put in there if there is.

have unplugged & removed srs controller under the ash tray (presume its it, 'air bag sensor assy' part number 89170-35040), and unplugged & removed both air bags but still won't start.

the air bag light isn't coming up on the dash either.
the plugs to do with the air bags are bright yellow, so searched for any other bright yellow plugs and found one behind relay box below fuses by accelerator but unplugging that hasn't helped.
what fuse does the air bag set up use? there isn't an obvious one with srs on it or similar. would that being taken out help?

The srs system has no tie into the engine at all, they are a stand alone system so that nothing else can interfere with deployment in an accident. How unplugging an airbag would stop it running is very odd.

googling last night looking at forums around the world and people having problems others said the fuse used is ECU-B, which also controls remote locking, alarm/immobilisor, radio, things like that that have permanent power.
so when I get a chance i'll pull that out and see what happens.

just tried starting with ECU-B fuse out, still nothing.

plugged air bags & controller back in, still no go. unless I have missed something.
I wired in the supercharger but hadn't tried starting it. had to wait for vacuum hoses before I started it to make sure it was right.
all connected up as per the instructions so can't see why that would do it.
but I know when I first unplugged air bag it wouldn't go, just had lights on dash, but plugged back in and it went.

What's your reason for removing air bags?
If it's because of custom bar work there is a loop hole I found
Have your tried diconnecting battery to reset ecu?

Lchundy wrote:What's your reason for removing air bags?If it's because of custom bar work
yeah mainly because of bars. maybe SAS might affect it. also if there was a problem with air bags later on it can be costly, while the certs being done get rid of them.
Lchundy wrote: there is a loop hole I found
hows that work?
Lchundy wrote:Have your tried diconnecting battery to reset ecu?
yeah battery is disconnected because haven't sorted wiring from swapping transfer case & it won't let the key turn completely off, like its not in park.

I have a mate with a SAS 185 surf, he has removed the ABS and airbags before cert. I think there is a write up on here bob_or_jim was his username. I do remember the engine not starting after it was out but I cant remember why, he might pop in here for comment.

When I looked into doing my custom bar work on my cruiser with air bags was told few different things
So I read up on it
The 3 things I found on lvvta site that got me through cert with air bags were
MC class vehicle
GVM exceeds 3500kg(not sure what surf is)
And manufacture date is pre frontal impact laws
When I took truck in he did mention that I would have to remove air bags and pre tension seatbelts so I showed him this info
He did pass it but had to wait a while for comfiramation from lvvta head office.

gen 3 surf 'curb vehicle weight' is just over 1800kg.
Lchundy wrote:And manufacture date is pre frontal impact laws
when is that date? mine is 1996.

From memory pre frontal impact for MC class is 2003
Mine is a 97 so 96 is sweet and this is what should get you through cert
It is a grey area though but I stood my ground

that might be the thing. are you saying can pass cert if does exceed? or doesn't exceed?

Sorry just double checked
This is for MC class vehicle
Frontal impact threshold
GVM 2500kg or more
Manufactured before 2003
So if your surf has a gvm of 2500kg or more in theory you don't have to comply with frontal impact

Personally I would leave them in if possible for safety. Face on steering wheel is not good for face. Second hand units are cheap enough if one becomes faulty. Up to you though

I would but didn't want to have to buy a air bag compatible bar. but it depends on what Lchundy is saying.
have googled the GVM for 185 surf but can't find anything official. have seen 2105kg, 2400kg, 2510kg, 2003 surf 2780kg.
how do you find the GVW(R) of a vehicle?

Type your number plate into car jam and it should have the GVM there.

carjam reckon 'gross vehicle mass 2045kg'. but according to specs about my surf 'curb vehicle weight 1810kg'. which means you are only legally allowed to add 235kg before being over GVM. which is less than 3 people, no gear, no trailer.

I have seen 2 different interpretations of GVM, One is the weight of the vehicle with no load and the other is the maximum weight of the vehicle including load. The latter is usually called GLW or gross laden weight here and would include the vehicle, fuel, occupants and any gear in or on the vehicle not including a trailer.
I would guess you GVM at around 2000kg as that is what my R50 weigh's in at.

yeah about the same. so that means that Lchundy's
Lchundy wrote:GVM 2500kg or more
will mean the air bags will have to be removed.

What does a decent bumper and winch weigh? add in your soild axle and bigger tyres, beefy tyre carrier with a matching spare and you may be over 2500 empty, if it a part of the vehicle it counts towards your GVM.
It would be worth getting it weighed.

ok. might pay to wait until I have added everything then, and see what it does weigh.

Pretty positive it's what manufacturer says gvm is not what it weighs once you added all your mods
So all lvvta will do is check what's details are on rego which would be what's on car jam

that's how I thought it worked, because its an actual rating.
so still need to figure out why it won't start.

won't even try and turn over, just a click when key turned. the symbols come up on dash and that's it.

Have you plugged the inhibitor switch back in? Its the big plug on the side of the transmission.
