Prolly a real stupid question , what colour is the oil ment to be in a lsd diff and a open diff?

I dont think there is any colour difference between LSD oil and normal gear oil..... so long as its not full of water and white

Went to jump in my ute today and was greeted by some oil sitting on my wheel rim seemed to be a brownish colour, just thinking i dont think thats the right colour. weird thing is to that it only did it the once after i picked it up from getting the timing belt done. Any ideas? would of thought it would keep leaking

Changing the timing belt shouldn't cause the diff to leak.

Can you see any obvious area where it might be coming from? Often the diff axle seal or wheel bearing goes and fluid leaks out through the brake assembly.

Yeah knew that it only leaked on the trip back home bout 15ks and never since but the wheel bearing is sounding noisy and it was coming out through the brake assembly area. so its off 2 get fixed

You don't say what truck you have.

I have done rear wheel bearings and it's straight forward. Hardest part will probably be getting the drum off!

Once that's done you just need to unbolt the four axle retaining bolts and you are nearly home!

Get a bearing kit off trademe and take it to your local garage to get them to fit it to the axle. The bearings are usually pressed on and off the axle.

Refill the axle with the right oil, LSD or standard, and away you go. If it's leaking then water may have got into the fluid so it should be drained and refilled.

sweeet, yeah got a toyota hilux ute, and diff has got a lil water in it ......... its off 2morrow to get sorted then tripping about on sat/sunday

I can prolly change it for you, one sat (provided work allow me to do it, they are being stupid at the mo)

As gomulletgo if he has the recipt for his bits. We got the bearing from Saeco $80 ish I think from memory.

We also did the brake shoes as the oil had leaked over them.

IF you want some rear shoes. I have a set of genuine toyota ones. They Fit the Ln6o model, and fit most hilux's across the range.

The bearing is easy enough to do, but you do really need a gas plant and a press.

Cheers for the offer elmo, got the rear one done when it got sent in for the axle seal and rear bearing done, but now i think the two front bearings have gone, the wheel kinda rocks when tilting it sideways? bit scared to check the last remaing one front diff oil looks fine, think the rear breather got squashed on the last trip

Sorry, didnt read post correctly, just assumed rear. Ive never done fronts on a 4wd before, but I guess, being a Cv joint, it will just be the same as a fwd, which arent all that hard either.
