I've had a rear 40 series long axle in my 70 series for the past 2 years, I wasnt aware of any differences in lengths when I put it in and never measured them? I don't know if the 20mm difference is in the hub or a wider axle housing (long or short side or both?) but I did find this diagram on some web site a while back and it shows upto 1989 70 series long axles as pretty much the same length as 40 series?
