Winch not going :(

Post by nigelb »

Hi I've got a problem with the winch and am trying to work out what's going on. We used it quite a bit last weekend without any problems. I went to wind the excess cable in yesterday while fixing things and the winch won't go at all. The solenoids click but no motor action. Does anyone know what the problem may be or what else I can check? I have checked all electrical connections that I can find.

TIA

what type of winch is it? Do the solinoids click as normal ie only to run it or click continously? Have you checked stuff with a volt meter?

Hi no I haven't checked with a voltmeter. Should I check the power flowing into the winch motor? They just click once when I push either in or out button. I don't know what they used to sound like because I've never heard them click over the noise of the winch itself. It's a trademe Chinese winch. 24V 9000lb. My batteries are 2 weeks old.

Cheers

Ive had the same problems with our 9000lp warn lowmount and it has always been the solenoids. If your lucky you can tap them with a hammer and they may start working again. Would recomend replacing them though.

Hi nigelb, I had this problem with my chinese 12v winch and it was the earth brushes had rusted between brush mounting plate and main body if that makes sense, solenoids would work and power would get to winch but no go,just drilled out the rivets that hold the brushs in cleaned them up put small stainless nuts and bolts to hold them in and away it went, hope this helps

hi nigelb, i have had a similar problem, solonoids went etc but winch was dead. pulled it apart and turned out to be a brake in the brushes circut where it exited the body to one of the terminals....
best bet would be to pull it apart and have a nosey.... youd save some money not taking it to someone.
theres not really a lot inside :) just a thought
