Terrano wiring loosing smoke!

Post by kiwipete »

Well I just returned from my months holiday and there she was, as flat as a turd.

Out with the car and connect the jumper leads, pos to pos and neg to neg.

Woah there boy, there's smoke escaping from the wiring loom near the battery and some from the dash too.
Looks like the wiring loom one is a fuseable link, nut i'm not 100% on this, and the dash smoke is possibly the ignition switch as it was bloody hot when I removed the plastic covers to see where this smoke was comming from.

Will have to leave it till tomorrow and see what the Insurance company wants to do.
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

Thanks for the offer for the smoke Jeff but I had plenty of spare here as you can immagine.

The upshot of it all is that there may be a fault with the alarm(s), I have 2 in it, unproven yet till the battery is fully charged and can see what is draining it.

Blew a 40A fuse I put in that controlls all the accessories, radios, stereo, computer etc etc. Same type as is used for power amps.

60A fuseable link was blown and has been replaced, thats where most of the smoke escaped :!:

Ignition switch is ok for now, but it may play up in the future, fingers crossed.

Was also advised on replacing and upgrading the regulator in the alternator as these models apparently have a habbit of crapping out and getting the spline checked on the back where the brake booster is connected too. :?

Will need to save hard now and do the dual battery conversion now, as this will save the master battery should there be any future accessory faults on the system.

An hours work for auto sparky on a Sat morning callout for only $90.00
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

After a day fixing assorted blown fuses found all over the joint, I have one stuffed alarm unit.
Arms itself ok but wont dissarm or open the doors like it should. With all the trouble I have had in the past with it, I may just go without one.
It is a Uniden2600 from memory and a good one at that too.

Is there any other units you have found successful?
