hi Peter, ive been talking to Brian Climo about this and he is willing to help in any way possible, his connections with Work Safe NZ and DOC could be a big help, im putting an ad in the ruapehu bulletin in the next week or two to get support from locals that use the bush for any recreation pursuits. If i can get the paper to do a little article on the group i will contact you for clarification on what can actually be said, ill pay my subscription once the wife is home.

Thanks Vaughan, I talked with Brian a couple of months ago but haven't yet updated him on this. There seems to be a good level of interest and from DoC too. You might even get the Bulletin to run an article without needing to take an advert! They can find me at peter.vahry@xtra.co.nz
Thanks

Re: Friends of 42 Traverse Inc.
A general update on Friends of 42 Traverse. There is now a signed MOU in place with DoC that identifies the relationship between the two organisations.
DoC have advised that they have allocated a week of work by staff to cut back vegetation sometime in November. That work will still only just be a start on what's needed, so it is likely that some scratching of vehicle paintwork can still be expected.
It is anticipated that the route will open to 4WD traffic from 1 December, but that is still to be confirmed.

Rode through on the mountain bike on Saturday. Track was in decent condition, a few slippery bits but driveable by any proper 4wd on mud tyres I'd guess. The scrub is narrowing it up a bit in a lot of places though. DOC sign still had opening date as 1 Dec.

Re: Friends of 42 Traverse Inc.
Thanks Clint for your update...
Friends of 42 Traverse Inc. http://www.friendsof42traverse.nz/index.html have been advised by DoC that the bollards at the entrances to the 42 Traverse have been removed today. DoC have cautioned that the vegetation cut back work they had planned was not achieved due to poor weather. That means that the route will be scratchy in several areas.
The 42 Traverse is a 'special' place and the Friends of 42 Traverse and the NZFWDA would like to keep it that way, so please take care and don't 'rip it up'. Only the main track is permitted for 4x4 use, so please stay on it.

I realise it is a free for all and anyone can go in willy nilly now etc
I'll belatedly and happily put $50 towards some diesel for a machine to keep it in shape
Well done Team + Pete
Is my 4WD a tax concession?

The team at Friends of 42 Traverse have taken another step and it is now a registered charity, which means that receipts can be provided for donations that will enable tax rebates for donors.
