Correct way to check trans fluid

Whats the "correct" way to check auto trans fluid in an old 95 Mistral auto? Have drained and refilled mine twice but would like to know it has enough...or if I've overfilled it.....

Hot then idle in park, or neutral..or cold?

What did you bother draining it for ? How much actually came out ? My guess is about 4 litres of the 12 or so in it

Idling in neutral is my belief
