An Un-named Outlaw...

Lol Im starting another one for me..... well sorta
I'm gona take some of the good bits from a southern trials truck and build a bit of a winch truck Outlaw class also going to add a few fruity bits and pieces from my thrasher landy (rear suspension and a few other bits) as well as a few bits n pieces that have been laying around my shop

This isn't going to be my normal build, yes it will be a bit different got a few ideas that might be a bit unique... na the catch with this one is its going to be done on minimal tools.... I'm building it while working away
Also I intend to thrash the parts truck while I build this so it wont have much stuff bolted in till near the end

Basic outline will be
Motor and trans, V6 commy mid mounted
Body, space framed tube chassis and body resembling an old landy
Front axle , De Ranged Porn axle with hydro steer possibly going six shooter and air locker
Rear axle, De Ranged Porn axle hilux air locker and fiddles
Suspension, 1/4 eliptical front and rear on dual triangulated 4 links,(rear out of my thrash landy but with JJ's and range rover balljoints) possibly with a very cool tweek for all corners something I've wonted to do for a very long time will wait n see how I go lol
Winch will be electric.... to be honest I'll wait n see what I find for this

Now since I've bought the trials truck with no wheels thats the first thing I'm sorting
picked up a set of 16x9 steely's and got a set of 35x10 sliverstones, since I'm planing on using the Hi clearance porn axles I don't want a wide rim so first thing to do is thin them a little so I'm cutting a little over an inch out of them to narrow them

Like I said minimal tools wrapped the grinder in rags so the vice could grip it gently lol hey it worked
Got the first one all good to weld started burning it in and discovered the fuse for the plug is a 10 amp lol this is all I got

Unfortunately the fuse board is a rather large industrial one with lots of fuse banks so I've flaged it for the night will get a mate to help me find it tomorrow

A wee teasers of an update
Just got back from a roady to go get the "outlaw" she's sitting at work, no brakes, exhaust manifold leak, no reverse gear on the trans its slipping bad.... think this maybe due to way to much oil in the trans, I'd guess a collapsed king pin bearing on one corner that I'd guess has been gone for a while due to the excessive wear on the disk, the rear self centering hydro steering lol yea well hmmm and lol well.... you really need to see some pics of this... unfortunately my cam on the phone is crap (I tried but you really can't see what you want to see), got a new one arriving tomorrow hopefully

lol I love it.... there is some real cool engineering in this.... but its this wild cross of trials tech redneck style lol we are going to thrash this thing

No idea sorry mate. I just pulled levers and wiped the mud off
Besides that, the current truck that broke us is factory motor and box and still runs a transfer
Prior to that was SR20 attached to a Maxima box I believe, but I have no idea how much ATF although I do recall pre trial checks involved using the factory dipstick as per the specs

From what I remember you fill them up to 5mm above the mark on the dipstick.

Been talking with a mate who is a technical oil specialist and he's convinced the missing reverse is the oil.... its the wrong type so going to flush it and see

There is more lol lets just say I have a few things to fix before I thrash this..... but i'm going to do as little as I can to this, since I'm building a whole new chassis body for it

The cage was narrower originally, it was cut down the middle of the cross and that bit added in.

That makes sense on the B pillar you can see the addition (and the plug welds for muff joints so done properly) but why the ugly joins to the uprights on the X either side of the flat section also the A pillars have been welded to the outside of the B pillar (look in the first pic) this shouldn't pass scrutineering
From the chat with the builder (tony) he seemed too switched on to do some thing like this.... made me think someone has "played" with this
Fixing these issues (make the cage safe), changing the hydro steer linkages to clevis style joints with rose joints (strengthen and replace some worn out balljoints) replacing the rad and adding a separate trans cooler and lines (solve a water leak and make me happier) and armor platting the trans sump (fix a leak and finish what someone else has started doing)
The rest is all mechanical (brakes steering, oil water etc )

Oh and make a trailer for it..... anyone know where I could get a duals rear axle and springs from a light commercial truck

Finally doing something with this.... got a 20L of the right trans fluid and a few cans of brake clean time to do some work on it


First off sort the sump so I can move it around... and stop the oil leak under it spreading
Now when I bought this the sump was dry other than a couple of small weep marks where the welds for the sump guard had pin holes 2 weeks later and the whole sump is wet.... suggests its been dry untill just before I turned up to buy it hmmmm
Get the sump off and discover the over full nice red oil is sitting ontop of some thick black oil..... that I think may have been what was left of the trans fluid last time it was taken out for a play... Oh yay
On a positive note when I started to wash the black stuff out I found someone had tossed a couple of magnets in the bottom of the sump and these only had normal wear (metalic powder) on them, this is a good thing because of what I noticed next
The filter has a dint in it that has been good enough to loosen the filter element inside it!.... the sump does have some damage hiding under the plate reinforcing, odd thing is they don't match the dint in the filter... and there is lots of silicon on the inside of the obviously reused sump gasket.... more hmmmm
Hate finding stuff like this... it leaves me wondering what the F is going on or gone on...
Oh well since the magnets were all good I'll keep going lol
First off remove the plate off it and fix the dints


I did try and get a shot of the dints nothing major worst one was about 10mm deep but the camera just didn't show them... a bit of panel beating with a claw hammer on a wooden bench (I miss my workshop and tools lol) and a flap its ready


Almost an hr later I have a CAD profile curticy of mates box he bought for an F-up at work lol


At this point I decided it was time to go home given I'm going to be bending this with a cold chisel and hammer and vice lol did I mention I miss my tools and workshop

There is worse... but I have to admit I was impressed with that one, would never have thought of that myself lol

Right finished the armour plating for the sump....


now a coat of paint and new filter and seal and I can thrash the trans to burn off the bad oil from the trans brakes/clutches

All painted and on with a new filter and the right oil..... top up the water for the motor and half an hr of thrashing the truck around the yard (backing off well before the ends of the yard because of no brakes!) I've learned my mate was right the gears are coming back as the clutch bands burn off the bad oil, reverse was the worst 6000 rpm in reverse with beerly any movement at the start.... by the end it was good enough if I selected a gear it moved it.... it still isn't sitting me back in the seat so still alot of slippage but I can now identify the gears as the trans changes so thats one problem sorted
Also got the self centre steering to work, was just a stone jamed in the centering direction of the steering control lever.... this is very cool, the neibours had a few cones set out in the yard for forklift training and I was able to scoot round in them... give the lever a flick back and the rear pops centre again

As for the latest issues/bodges I've found
I have found out whats wrong with the rear caliper (the one with 3 pads)....feel free to correct my assumption on this, but trials in southland must require more braking from the rear drivers side as it has been fitted with an IFS hilux caliper you know the ones with the 4 big pistons the ones that are normally used with vented disks lol its no wonder the pistons are popping out
This is also the reason why I didn't bother to try and bleed the brakes.... I've got some spare solid disk calipers at home (in the scrap pile lol good thing I didn't get around to taking that lot to the scrappy!) so I'll grab that next time I'm home
Found the fuel tank has a leak where the "knead-it" used to "weld" the filler neck on has come unstuck.....
Now I've got it running the front CV/DS to gearbox case seal is leaking bad... probably the real reason why the trans was empty
The auto choke on start up isn't working right on cold startup.... running real ruff and struggling
And I have the engine check warning light on all the time, even when its warmed up and running

Ran out of time to play on it so didn't look to see if the original OB2 plug is still there.... I hope so

All the drama and rough state of the trans and motor has me considering if I'd be better with a new option.... seriously considering putting in a bid on an insurance right off car with a moderate k's toyota 2gr-fe and tip tronic trans

Just for the moment since the toy is out of action till I get back with a new (scrap) caliper and I'm able to sort the brakes, I decided to start something else lol like starting new projects

Now every Out law needs a ride and in this case my toy is no different so $1000 later and a few hrs after work

Just a few more bits to cut and that is all the frame done, got to finish the CAD stuff for the mounting tabs and the drive over guards and I can send them off to the profile cutters, in my shed tomorrow so will machine up some spring shackles for it

Any CHCH boys know where I could get a meter and a half of 80nb med pipe.... I need it for the axle

Me and Beertara had a play after work on the toy... had to pull it out of the container lol battery isn't that good, but we are getting good charge once running so one more thing to sort for it
Beertara swopped over the rear caliper from the vented IFS caliper to an old solid axle one I'd brought down.... then did a check of the other pads on it..... found the passangers front the pads were that loose they were rattling so pulled the wheel and caliper... we bent a clamp trying to push the first piston back in, didn't move at all lol so swopped the caliper for the other one I bought down (good thing I forgot which side the IFS caliper was on, and bought a pair) also striped the wheel bearings, cleaned them up and repacked them as the hub was that loose it had worn the pads on an angle! lol
Heres a shot showing the two calipers we pulled off.... its no wonder the IFS one spat a piston, even with the extra pad in there as a spacer lol


A litre and half of brake fluid later we're out in the yard laughing out heads off.... I have some braking if I push hard enough to flex the firewall I can stop it, booster is stuffed (anybody in CHCH got a hilux one they want to selll lol) but on a positive note the wheel brakes work! them and 4 wheel steer is a real laugh

While the toy was out of its home I rolled out the axle for the trailer and will sort this today.... and get the last of the side frames for the trailer welded up so when the profiles arrive I can glue it all together

Awesome engine Reece, I'm seriously considering one of these for my Surf tow wagon, they go very well.
This outfit in the UK has done many conversions into MR-2's, somehow ended up on their site late one night lol

Cheers Mate..... had a look I like there comment supercharger on factory injectors and ecu, I found alot of stuff about a TRD charger kit for them that was released in Aus catch is it wasn't a big production run, plenty of pic's but no real tech on this setup but as it would happen.... I happen to have a M90 stashed away lol and from my math its about the right size and from the pictures I've found looks to remarkably similar to the TRD unit ..... but I'll worry about that after I've worked out how to recharge 48v's worth of batteries so I can run a cool winch

What about running a 240vac generator and converting to 48vdc?
My pik is that would be the only way to get a decent amperage of say 100a . It would mean the 240vac would have to put out 20 to 25 amp. Then look at welders for the ac to dc converter.

Lets assume we start of with 10 amps worth of charge from the alt (left over amps not needed to run things going on average 30 amp alt) you have one battery it charges at 10amps, but when you charge 4 in parallel you only charge at 2.5 amps so its going to take ages to charge.... not even close to the usage they will get when winching

This is effectively the same.... most stepups unless you get into silly money are less than 5amp at 48v so I'm talking hrs to fully recharge min's to drain lol

There is also the issue when the batteries are low because there is so many they will draw alot of HP from the truck to spin the alt..... still doing my research on this.... not as simple as it first appears lol

Or bolt the V6 to a Celica GT4 transaxle and use the spare driveshaft for a God/PTO setup.. Malaysians been doing it for years
Forget that lectric shit, you're going to get so stuck that motor on the winch will draw 500 amps and then get hot then draw even more amps, and you'll still be stuck, hydro is not cheap for speed, PTO/God only needs engineering and shit....

you know your a bastard jafa..... I had this nice plan, motor and trans standard electrics just need to find and fool the body control module, no heavy or inventive machining of parts since I don't have access to the tools and you come along and suggest a good idea that..... lol

Oh and have considered god winching it..... direct off the crank with a clutch, well I've got alot of room out front with not much in it lol I need to improve my 3d cad skills so I can play with things....

Yes but why is it any different than the gearbox that your going to drive it off..... it will still need gearing reduction to set the speed so the torque loading will be the same
