QD32 ideas

Got a D22 with the QD32 in it, has had a switch in it for a looooooong time according to previous owner and been abused savagely... So probably done at least 500,000ks? Anyway something inside the block has decided to try and exit the block creating a nice inspection hole :( Have yet to investigate the cause but safe to assume I need at least a new short block but it seems that I'm gunna have a hard time finding something so contemplating chucking a TD27 in it to get it going... :? Anybody got any ideas on where I might find a QD32?

I know the caravans came out with the QD32 couldn't find anything there... Just searched the elgrande on trademe and couldn't find much. It appears all factory turbo versions have the electronic pump, the crank is 7-bolt as well from what I understand? Whereas mine being factory NA has a 6-bolt crank? So need a factory non turbo motor to be able to bolt up my flywheel etc... Is that correct? PS happy to donate a finders fee if ya can spot one for me

Tell em ya just want a bare block. Without injector pump manifolds etc etc really just need a bottom end still assembled and maybe a head if yours isn't damaged.

I did ask but they weren't keen to split... have been asking around today and getting the same story

Have found a long block in Christchurch which was apparently a bit tired and smokey, guy wants $500 for it was thinking maybe worth a go to rebuild it and have a mint motor?

the other option is to find a qt32t, tho may need gearbox and all. can't remember the differences in bellhousing.
its a stronger engine but you will need to change the injection pump as most are ecu controlled.

That'd be the go. Basically need a block and another rod and piston...will leave three spares as well for the rebuild. Just make sure th crank is the same bolt pattern for the flex plate/flywheel if not ask for that as well if they have it...you probably won't find one much cheaper and rebuild gives you piece of mind

FYI zd30 qd and td27 all can share same bell housing

i thought there was something different in there. zd30, qd32t and td27t shared but qd32 and td27 where different. can't recall why, quite possibly i'm wrong :?

Apparently the guy had a good motor in a wrecked D22 that he sold and got this motor as part exchange so condition mostly unknown just going off what he was told hopefully the gamble pays off. From what I understand the non turbo QD32 in navaras have a 6 bolt crank and the QD32ETIs have a 7 bolt crank?

so, is the QD32 non turbo as gutless as a few people reckon, or not so bad?

To be honest it was pretty bloody good when it was going, would leave a 2.8 hilux for dead! Still got turbo kit waiting in the shed for the new motor though haha

to keep it in context anything except a 2.4 hilux would leave a 2.8 hilux for dead :D :D

dunno bout that, years ago accelerating from a 70 area into a 100 I was in my 91 mitsi l200 2wd 2.6 petrol and a 4wd 2.8 hilux over took me, I dropped into 4th but no way I could keep up with him. sold the piece of s@#$ after that.

anyway, back to the QD32, sorry I'm no help there.

True... Have had a 2.4na hilux on 35" silverstones and it still went pretty bloody good, 100kmh wasn't too much of a struggle! Have also driven a 3.0na hilux which was just about slower than a 2.8... The QD32 really wasn't far behind my mates 1KZ d/c hilux to be honest, will leave him in its dust with a turbo...

Engine manufacturers don't cast different blocks just because its turbo. The difference is in the crankshaft having extra bolts to handle the torque. ...FYI even my pajero with a blown head gasket could still leave a 2.8 lux for dead.

also of note harry qd32 non turbo to td27 turbo require a different throwout bearing due to flywheel offset and fork to pressure plate fouling in some cases

different flywheel is what i was thinking of, so possibly different clutch setup.
afaik the qd32t has stronger rods and pistons. a lot more suitable for getting a lot of power out of.

Are you sure? Cos if I'm gunna do a rebuild I might as well do it with the best bits.

not sure. i'm more zd30 myself.
i've seen it somewhere that the qd32 and qd32t where a bit different and qd32t was the stronger version.

Qd32-t bolts to a td27-t gearbox....td27-t bolts to a td27 box....qd32 bolts to a td27 box....qd32-t bolts to a zd30ddti box....bd30 blah blah..see where this is going...lol.

Qd32 is no stronger then the td27...its just got a better more modern combustion chamber design and an extra half of litre is where the performance difference is. Physically the internals of the qd32 non turbo and turbo are the same bar the crank shaft bolt pattern.

But if its rebuild time none of that matters provided your non turbo crank is not damaged to the point it can't be used again it will go into any other qd block....then it is a matter of taking the best parts from the two engines and making one good one. Don't worry about bearing surface damage as it will be getting reground anyway and new shells to suit the reqrind same goes for the bores.
