I am having some problem with my motor not turning over. 3l non turbo.
Battery is good 730CCA calcium, with 12.35 volts showing in the morning.
Drove to my garage and he load tested the battery, 675CCA available.
New starter motor, and the starter relay is fine.
Earths have been cleaned and inspected.
Charging at 13.35 at idle and 14.7 ish at 100kph
I just hear the solenoid click but no go.
It will crash start easy as, if I go for a drive and return home, it will turn over on the key for about an 2 hours after, then nothing again.
It would appear that the battery is draining, but evidence seems to say no.
Anything else I should look at ?
Paul.

Re: 96 Hilux starting problem.
Have you done anything recently electrically that could drain battery ?
12.35 is flat
Google testing for parasitic load to see how much drain ya getting off battery.
Was the battery tested as soon as you got there or did they drain a bit off first ?

Hi skid,
Nothing new electrically. Battery was tested when I got to garage, he had a special drain testing thingy. Just put another battery in from mates truck and still no go. Just the solenoid click.

Re: 96 Hilux starting problem.
sounds like dud starter motor.
cheapy replacement was it ?
find the old one and rebuild it.

Re: 96 Hilux starting problem.
so you have had plenty of practice then
pull it out and see where the problem is. see what bits they skimped on.
just a thought, put a volt meter on the connections and get someone to crank it. if no volt drop then its oc otherwise see if there is drop across the solenoid and read the voltage at the starter connection.
handy way to check volt drop across terminals etc and see if there is a bad connection.

Re: 96 Hilux starting problem.
Mine has the same problem intermittently, I carry a bit of galv pipe to give it a thump. and away I go. As it is an auto bump starting is not an option. I will be pulling it out again as the contacts and plunger are new along with the brushes. The only thing I can thing of is a dead spot on the armature so I have picked up another one, checked the armature and plan to swap them over.

Re: 96 Hilux starting problem.
Make sure contacts have gone in flat.. quite often I found they are bent past 90° and don't sit flat. I flip them over on the vice and give then a tap down on the bend before install. Then hold the inside bolt head with a spanner while doing up the outside ( rebuilt hundreds...all I did for first year of apprenticeship ...) Also cheak for volt drop on the excite wire. Can cause the same symptoms
modified surf, hardly drive it seem to keep modifying it....

Re: 96 Hilux starting problem.
Ok, so we are underway.
I was told the brushes were done before I got the truck, two were and two weren't. The two that weren't changed were the ones that are spot welded on. So all changed and we are starting again with no issues.
