The misty hills of the Waikato dairy country were blasted with the sounds of a wild variety of speed machines on Saturday at the annual dirt drags. I went along with a few mates to find out what it was all about.
Jeff's GSXR powered weapon:
One of the fastest vehicles of the day.
Same guy built this for the quad class:
Yes. That is a twin turbo R1 motor in a Blaster frame. No, I don't know how he hangs on to it.
Several other crazy road bike based creations were also in the race
The Duc in the foreground had some sort of mad scientist sliding rear axle that altered the wheelbase during the run.
...plus a big bunch of MX bikes. The very pointy end of the MX pack - international level riders - were actually a similar pace to the road bike mutants in some runs.
Then there were the cars and, er, other things...
How about a lawn tractor kinda thing with a 12A rotary? The only thing more impressive than how fast it went was that it actually held together with all the chassis flex & axle hop
'ol ute with a Godzilla motor... Seemed to have trans issues but went pretty fast when it worked.
Tim deals to another boosted Lexus powered Hilux to take out fastest 4wd of the day:
This T-bucket was the fastest 2wd vehicle of the day
Knowing that the 640 wasn't going to stand a chance against most of the two wheeled classes I decided to bring my Landcruiser.
Poor Jeep got well beaten in my first run. Easily dispatched a diesel Landcruiser in the 2nd then got edged out by Tim by about half a sec in the 3rd... unsurprisingly as we both have the same 4.0 Lexus V8 but he has a supercharger too.
In the afternoon session Simex traction won out over Godzilla hp...
...and also over G-wagen refinement, but not by much...
...then i got taken out by another supercharged 1UZ-FE, this time in a trials buggy. My best time on the 1/8 mile strip was a 12.3, the fastest of the bikes turned in a shade under 9 sec.
It was a really fun day. Will definitely be back next year.
Cheers
