so i have my 5 speed and transfercase from my 89 cruiser siting on the shed floor ( for 2 years)
i ran a v8 in the truck, didn't keep the vacume stuff from original firewall setup.

Question to the experts
Is there a mod for removal / change of parts for the transfer case diaphragm thing by the front drive shaft ???

If it's the same setup as the vac operated 70 series units then you can remove the vac part and it will leave a hole with a rod sticking out.
You can buy a seal to fit around the rod and also in the cavity of the housing. I did this to a mates trailer queen and also made a backing plate to hold the seal in. (just in case) Then it's a matter of making a lever to operate it.

without the vacuum solenoid's and diaphragm you've also lost L4 when you put the transfercase into low range it activates a switch on the back of the transfercase housing that in turn activates the 2WD/4WD solenoid's on the firewall and diaphragm to engage/disengage the front output shaft

Thats true but that won't matter... as you have full control of the 4wd 2wd via a lever and then hi / low.
Now you could go low 2wd..... hahaha

hi thanks for the replys.
Checking if i have this right;
Using factory levers, shift into 4wd hi or low, This still only 2wd until moving diaphragm activated lever, shifting front output into 4wd?

Yup.
One lever hi and low
One lever 2wd and 4wd.
Back to the old school setup the early cruisers had... before all this vac electrical stuff.
Much simpler..
Plenty of info on the net of people removing vac unit...

If possible find a manuel gearbox and trans from off a early to mid 80 fj40/ bj40

They will have the lever and brackets that you want. 1 lever and it will do both hi / low and 4x2 and 4x4.
Its what im using...

i tried this option but was a real pain in the arse to engage sometimes.. since then i have 2 levers like Kbushnz has mentioned.. once in 4wd.. just flip from hi to low or even when in low flip from 2wd to 4wd. very easy and reliable.

Search for Toyota twin stick, it's a common mod. 2LO can be extremely useful.

I need to do this too, I've got a dodgy vacuum and solenoid setup on my 12ht and really really want twin sticks. Reckon you could wack em on without dropping the gearbox?

Hi ive decided to go down the twin stick route.
Ordered a shaft seal.
Looking for a shaft sleeve/ dust cover .
Looking for a pto winch handle so i can lock lever in position.
Ill try swing the hi-lo and 2wd-4wd lever off the factory pivot.
Ill take a picture of the levers when done.

Im always looking to simplify any other ideas?
