Hi all
Been playing in the garage again this time with the shifter.
I have no TCU as went manual pump a long time ago.
Stumbled across a TCU in aussie and got one shipped over.
With the guy who made it we altered the program to use with my setup.
I had to put a new TPS unit onto my throttle linkages.
Also play with the speed sensor.
Had some big issues with this as the factory unit in my truck is a reed switch and the TCU software didn't like it (switch bounce)
Ended up swapping the reed switch for a Magnetic hall effect switch. Had to strip speedo apart and remove reed and graft in new unit.
Then rather than having switches to go up and down thru the gears, I adapted a Subaru Legacy sports shifter so I can used its tiptronic feature.
Here a a few pics of the install.
They dont do it justice... Lots of trial and errors...
Machining, welding, grinding and rewelding hhahah
TPS install, new brackets
Audino based TCU
Control panel switches before integrated into truck.
Legacy shifter grafted to toyota linkages and also toyota T bar fitted.
Digital display added to factory speedo cluster.

Thats cool, what was involved with the hall efect swap?
Re: A343F tiptronic / shifter swap. KZJ78 1KZT
I had to pull the speedo part out of cluster. Remove the old reed switch and then dremel the place where the reed switch was to hold the new hall effect chip. And get it in the sweet spot to trigger the unit. Then screwed and glued it in place. Run wires and install back into cluster.
Used one of these.

Re: A343F tiptronic / shifter swap. KZJ78 1KZT
ive always wondered if the audino unit could control a trans.. well done
Re: A343F tiptronic / shifter swap. KZJ78 1KZT
Cheers but not my work....
There is a little man in Aussie who is playing with them.
I have just installed it and with him tweaked it thru software updates to get it to work in my Prado.
He is now playing with making it fully automatic....

wow Calvin, again you show leadership in the tech department
how did that work out?
you were manualized before, so what is the big catch here?

Thanks Peter.
For me the main thing was drivability on road.
With the original setup you only got 3 gears via the lever. Then a button for 4th (od) then a switch for TC lock.
This new setup allows me to cruise up and down thru all four gears via the tiptronic feature of the lever.
and TCL either manually with a push button switch... Which turns off when brakes are hit.
Or TCL semi auto.... comes on at a preset speed... either in 3rd and or 4th...
This way it is more like a factory feel... gear changes are smooth, as the overrun clutches aren't being activated like when the lever is moved.
I am still to do more driving as truck is in the process of being certified. But to date it feels and works sweet...
The cert guy got the hang of it within a few minutes.....When doing the brake test.
For off road the lever will still be employed for downhill runs with engine braking....(limited with auto but has a bit)

Re: A343F tiptronic / shifter swap. KZJ78 1KZT
that sounds nice!
the TC lock is the red button in front of the lever in the original set up?
honestly I wasn´t using it so far on the other hand I don´t tow trailers etc., any other use for it?
is this an entirely new set up or have any of the previous mods on your gear box/ecu been necessary to build upon?
very interesting.
still not happy with my Autobox

TC lock in a factory setup is something that is not driver controllable.
The ECU will lock the torque converter (TC) under certain circumstances.
Normally above a certain speed , throttle setting etc etc.
My current setup as it stands now could be applied to a standard truck....(putting on the tiptronic setup and new controller)
The guy who developed the new controller uses a button setup attached to his original shifter.
I wanted something a little more robust.
The red button in front of the lever is the manual unlock of what is called the shift interlock...
Normally you can't move the lever out of park when the keys are off.... or no power...
Pushing the button releases the lock and you can move the lever.
