X5 Project.
X5 Project.
Well this should be fun.
No Haters please, yes they are a soft-roader... but how much we will see...
So I picked up my BMW X5 2001 got it cheap as it has water contamination in the Transmission, & Trans oil in the coolant..
Mmm nice messy job..
So jack & tools out & lets Get into it,
has taken about 40lt of trans oil to flush it out. started by removing the pan & filter, replaced filter & reinstalled clean pan, Removed cooler & put feed line in bucket & the return hooked up to bottle & pump of fresh oil, ended up with pan & filter off, huge bucket under the trans & flexi pipe to the pickup straight into fresh oil container, now seems quite clean, and gone for new air cooler,
As for the coolant, stripped the radiator out, will replaced with manual one so it doesn't have the extra outlet for the cooler. pulled all hoses, expansion tank etc & cleaned with hot water & persil. flushed the motor with hot water from hose, after it was quite clean fitted it back together & ran it on water & persil (tuff on grease but low suds & gentle enough for clothes) then short trips round the block with water flush in-between, until clean water is all that drains out, only then it it gets the antifreeze,
Only now up to real test drive to see if trans has survived, then we can get onto the fun stuff. watch this space..

Re: X5 Project.
what motor do you have, the petrol 3 litre 6 cyl,or 4.4 or 4.8 V8? or the diesel?
Re: X5 Project.
4.4 V8 would have liked the 4.8 but the 4.4 is still a V8 & parts are more abundant.

Re: X5 Project.
Well that was a little depressing...
After the trans behaving soo well for as long as it did I had got my hopes up.. Then reverse had other ideas,
Water & k's have killed it.
New one has arrived so mission for this week is to install...
Finished my 1st ever full wrap. imho she is looking the part.
Wheels & tyres on, minimal rubbing, need spacers as there is no poke at all. got 25mm rear & 20mm fronts. still waiting on the rears to come from Germany. had a little trimming to the front inner guard may need more when the spacers go on..
Dropped the template for the lift kit the engineer should be ready by the end of this week, found I can trick the rear airbags to allow me to set the height I want, and just about to the mm.
So the build is progressing well.

Re: X5 Project.
did you have a trans temp gauge on it ?
Re: X5 Project.
Na,
Did the feel test on the pipes to the cooler, although quite warm, could hold them. so wasn't roasting.
have & am thinking about it just to know,

Re: X5 Project.
Well has been a while since last update.
So before I got to installing new trans, she developed a timing chain rattle....
So over the last few weeks I have
Been sic with cold, Had a infected tooth pulled.
but on the car...
Pulled the front & done the timing chain guides, (learning on the fly)
Pulled the trans & installed new (again learning on the fly)
Test drive today...
Still waiting on lift kit (engineer lost sheet with details)
Wheels & tyres fitted, still have minor rub lift may fix that.
Full wrap fist time I have done a full wrap.
just ordered a BlueDriver scanner as that gives on the fly info, so should be able to monitor all sorts & no need for gauges.

Re: X5 Project.
Wow, wouldn't have picked you'd fit a set of 33's on one of those without some very major mods! Will be interesting to see how it goes. It'll certainly look badass

Re: X5 Project.
So today she has had some surgery on her rear end, Gone from a J lo ass to a Gal Gadot
Departure angle has gone from a very unimpressive 28 degrees to a better 43 degrees & this is before the lift kit...

Nothing wrong with just lo's ass, on her.
Looking good, gonna be interesting where this ends up.

I prefer Gal's but this could take the topic in a different direction....

Re: X5 Project.
i guess you will lose some of that 43 Degrees when you put a tow hitch socket on?
Did you know who Gal Gadot was prior to the wonderwoman role? She has acted in quite a few things, but i never took notice till the wonderwoman role.

wont loose any, got new detachable tow bar, & going to mod it so the bottom of the receiver will be same height as the bottom of the bumper. it has 12 bolts to attach it to the truck will swap most out for high tensile. it also attaches to the chassis rails. will also beef it up & get Recovery Hitch with 5ton Bow Shackle.

Re: X5 Project.
"chassis"? (insert raised eyebrow here)
I know what you mean.
What does your X5 have in terms of traction devices (eg lsd in rear, open diffs but with traction control etc)?

Re: X5 Project.
Wow going to be watching this build.
Re: X5 Project.
Open diffs, Hill decent button & electric traction... this model was built when BMW was in bed with Range Rover so it had the benefit of Rover's off road experience.BlakeNZ wrote:"chassis"? (insert raised eyebrow here)I know what you mean.

If I end up going nuts.... It's been known to happen,
1st I would swap the transfer box with a RR to get the low range & I think centre lock. (Would need to research 1st)
not sure if there is a LSD avail so may go a N.Z.I.G. lokker (Unlikely though)
My other thoughts, get a 400+hp 760i donor & turn in to a 2wd race truck.
For now will just enjoy as is, even if it is bad enough to make driving shiny runs a challenge.

Re: X5 Project.
Weekend update.
Lifted, had to go a bit less that hoped as the cv's would bind a little when wheel lifted.. so was abot 40mm front & 45mm rear.
Got trans temp gauge fitted & she's running nice & cool, even in stationary traffic.
Got the tow-bar modified & Recovery Hitch fitted.
Ended up with 8x m8 & 4x m10 high tensile & 6 factory bolts holding it all in place, so should be quite strong...
Just got to get the Exhaust finished & thats the rear sorted.
Ordered winch bar only to find its on 4 week back order
gutted..

Re: X5 Project.
wow! didn't think anyone would make a winch bar for a X5. you will lose some of your 40mm front lift
Re: X5 Project.
Your right no one does, Going Xrox for a ford ranger, will need some mods to fit & work. sim shape & width so hopefully it's just the mounting that needs work.BlakeNZ wrote:wow! didn't think anyone would make a winch bar for a X5. you will lose some of your 40mm front lift
lucky that being a 2001 I don't need to have AirBag proven bar,
& yea will loose a bit, was governed by the working angle of the CV's height is one thing but binding CV's when wheel/s lifted is a very bad bad thing.. hopefully wont loose to much..
