Diesel issues

Post by Pj_Marsh »

Hey guys
Just got my 12h-t rebuilt after blowing out 3 pistons. Tried a start up today, didn't fire so I went through cracking the fuel lines to make sure there was no air. Still no start, so I tried a petrol rag over the air intake. It fired, huge clouds of white then black smoke. Couldn't control the idle with the throttle at all, although it was idling around 1100rpm, even at the throttle mech by hand. Eventually I choked it with the manifold butterfly valve. It's still not starting by key, and I'm a bit stumped. Ideas?

Can't start with just the key
No throttle response
Very smokey

What has been done to the fuel pump?

Sounds like a linkage is gone in there? Very odd that is kept running but wouldn't start. Was it running smooth ?

The engine rebuilders (Motor Machinist's) here in palmy got a specialist in to do the timing on it, that's about it. Wasn't what I'd call smooth, layed a decent smoke screen Rommel would have been proud of, plus sounded pretty rough.

White smoke is unburnt fuel black smoke is over fueled(hence I suspected from what you describe the spill is under full load at idle) cranking it over would have injected fuel in at the wrong time( compression not high enough to combust it)/so it might sound daft bit check the timing again

Cheers crash, Ill have a go at it tomorrow. There's a chance there's still air in the lines so I'll have another go at bleeding the injector pump before I pull the front cover off.

Looks like its the timing in the fuel pump. I've got a little inspection port in the fuel pump with a mark that should match up with tdc on no.1, but it's showing on no.6. I think they've set it to tdc on 6 not realising they needed another complete rotation of the cam to match it to no.1. Thank's for the help dudes, was a bit discouraged for a while there

guees i remember timing an old v8 that was timed to exhaust stroke. played silly buggers just like what yours was doing, dont know much about diesels so didnt say much but did wonder if timing had been set to 2nd rotation tdc
