Facet style square fuel pump Q

Hi have decided to fit a square electric inline pump to the old terrano and was wondering if I can use plain plumbers tape to ensure a good airtight seal when you screw in the hose barbs into the body of the pump. Set it up and tested but is drawing air from fitting so need to seal
