Trouble shooting 5l hiace swap

Howdy
Can any toyota gurus help me get my glow plugs and temp gauge working
I have a 1991 hiace that has cooked it's original motor, a 2.4 2l, I've replaced it with a 5l but it still has all the 2l wiring and ecu, I have just swapped a couple plugs where needed, once the motor gets warm the temp gauge goes right up and stays there, I think this might be to do with the gauge not getting the correct resistance? And the first time I attempted to glow the plugs with the new motor in, it blew the glow plug fuse (i have a replacement fuse) so it currently has no glow but it still runs fine but the cold starts are rough with no glow, could this just be a case of needing to swap the plugs from the 2l to the new motor if they're compatible?
Any help is very appreciated, cheers
