Finding serial numbers

Crawled underneath my 2a 109 last Christmas, ate some dust, licked some transmission oil and banged my forehead on a cross member but ....

Where can I find the gearbox serial number so I can confirm which version it's running?
Years ago it got 1st, 2nd & Reverse fixed and the non-landrover mechanic told me that he fixed syncro on 2nd gear - this means its a series 3 gearbox?

Where is the serial number on the transfer case?

I'm hoping both gearbox and transmission serial numbers can be found once one has crawled underneath and not have to strip off the deck or cabin to gain access.

And finally ...

*cough* Where is the chassis number located! *cough*

I searched below, above, and around the front springs and firewall / cross member area's but didn't see it.

The only reference to the correct chassis number is a small piece of metal stamped & riveted on top of the radiator grill. But I know this isn't original because the gear box mechanic put that on her!

Thanks.

Thanks mike & lilpigzuk!

Hmm, now to have another look next time I near the 109. Wonder why I didn't see them in the first place, they're quite large. Might be under a coat or two of paint

Thanks again.

Engine number was relatively easy to locate, at least I think what I found was the right one.

Found some information regarding the gearbox number location. Seems it's stamped on the right hand side of the casing at the rear. Armed with this, I'll crawl underneath her once again with a bigger torch next time I'm at where she's parked up.

By the way, I found this interesting (at least for me) PDF (1.5mb) on line:
