I know both engines are not the favorites but if you had a choice which would you go for?

3Y - 2 liter Petrol

or

2L-T - 2.4 Liter Turbo Diesel

What is the preference in the late 80s surfs?

Tough call.. the 3Y is thirsty on gas (my 3Y used as much petrol as the 5MG-EU 2.8 litre straight 6 did!) getting around 350km from a tank (65 litres) !!!

At least the diesel will return around 100km per 10L approx...

however a replacement 3Y is about $200, a replacement 2L-T will be around $1k and just as likely to poo itself as the one you are replacing.

Offroad the 3Y was ok... worked very well in deep water and just kept going. Mine was LPG which was good... got 350km from $35 LPG...

Really, it depends what you are going to do with it... if its just offroad, do the petrol thing... if its a daily driver and you live 45km from work like I do then go the diesel or get a 2nd mortgage :)

I've got a 2L-T powered LN61, and a mate has the 3Y-E. Must say the 3Y goes better, but is very thirsty. I average about 10.5l/100kms, he averages about 14l/100kms.
I would rather the petrol to drive and fix (if it broke), but quite happy with the diesel to feed. And if it breaks, a 5L(T) or 1KZ will go in its place

Thanks for the comments

My 3Y is noticeably sluggish when cold. Is this common or more likely a fault. When its warm it is more responsive but I wouldn't say its over-powered in the least, the opposite infact. I think I might need to look at the carb.

Also what oil is recommended for them?

Interesting you mention a 1-kz transplant - how possible/major is that? has it been done?

My mates one is EFI, goes ok even cold.
He just uses 15w-40, don't know what's recommended.
As for the 1kz, anything is possible with enough time and money. I will prob buy a written off truck so i have everything to change over

2L/T if I had to choose, once the head is fixed its a solid strong motor, and obviously for wheelin' in the damp works far better under water than any petrol motor.

Persoanlly, I'll keep the 1KZ/TE thats in our Surf though.
