HELP!! auto prob

Post by gtblair »

Hi,

I have more mu problems. Im thinking they could all be fixed with a match being thrown in the window. Anyway, my auto in my 92 2.8 mu was starting to play up today so I went and got some more fluid. It was low. I looked underneath for a fill bung but found nothing , called my mate he said put it in the dipstick hole so i did.

I added 2 litres . Then when i went to start it, it felt like the brakes were on and reverse was really jumpy.

Sooo, I checked the fluid level, it was ok. I then decided to drain all the fluid out and start again, I found there was 5 litres in it. I then put the 5 litres back in. Now I have no reverse and it feels like the brakes are on again.

aaaggh.

any ideas?

Are you checking the fluid level with the engine running and hot and the trans in park or neutral?

If the trans isn't hot or running then the fluid level will be wrong.

Probably worth doing a filter inside the trans pan and replacing ALL the fluid. It's cheaper to buy in big quantities.

What happens when you put it in neutral?

We've got what sounds like the same problem in our hilux - feels like the brakes are on in reverse (can't push it, but goes nowhere when you rev it) and we've got what seems like 1st gear in neutral.

I know nothing about what goes on inside of autos so don't have a clue what's causing it, but an auto guy suggested it could be the forward drive clutch pack welding itself together - which explains the symptoms.

So maybe that's what causing your problem?

We're just gonna swap another box in - simplest solution.
