My bro-in-law is having difficulty finding the correct Rancho 9000 series shocks for the front of his '89 LN65 Hilux. The firm supplying them has got it wrong twice now. Bit of a pain when he lives way out of town

The first set supplied were definitely the wrong end fixing type and the second set (RS99136) have only 140mm's of travel. The Blue Munroe’s that they are replacing have 180 mm's of travel.

Can anyone shed some light on the correct Rancho part numbers for a standard suspensioned Hilux LN65? Rear shock part numbers would be appreciated too. Any ideas on what the correct shock travel on the fronts and or rears should be?

I wonder if SupraLux might be able to answer this.

Hi Jonno... the factory shock part numbers for the Hilux are very very short - similar to standard toyota shocks... I've been through this a few times before and I can't remember what I ended up using - I think it might have been a Mitsi Paj rear shock number which gave similar travel lengths to the MaxiTrac front long-travel ones...

The company he got them from would have been using the stock numbers from the Rancho catalogue, so its probably not really their fault... you need to do a little digging and find something with a pin top and eye bottom (possibly the wrong eye, which is easily rectified by making a bush from a short piece of tube) that has the longest closed length you can get away with without trashing under compression and going with that.

Sorry, I don't have the numbers I used last time... normally when I'm fitting Ranchos to the front of a Hilux its post-SAS and I stuff 99012's in there (nearly 13" of travel, as opposed to about 5 or 6) - not something you can easily or safely do with a standard solid axle 'Lux.

I have a catalogue somewhere with open and closed lengths - not sure where it is but if I can find it I'll have a look for you.

Are you saying that Std toyota shocks have a travel around the 140mm mark?

What sort of travel do the Maxi-track ones have?

I can't recall the standard toyota front shock travel measurements, other than to say they are VERY short. The Rancho listing is also similarly VERY short. So short, in fact, that if you fit 2" lift leaf springs to the front of a Hilux then you can NOT do the shocks back up... they won't reach.

The MaxiTrac ones are nice and long - once again the exact measurements escape me, but I have them in another catalogue at home (also in an unknown location ) I'll have a look...

I don,t know who you are getting your gear from but I have used some guys in Auckland , Advanced Four Wheel Equipment 09 275 4850

see if the rs99158 or rs99187 are suitable they both have just over 7 inches ( remember they are american ) of travel and are around 13.2 in. closed , 20.5 open

Call them and ask the question , I have found them pretty helpful .

check the shocks page on 4wd bits they have lots of length specs.
