The only weak spot you'll find in a '91 petrol VX, is the bloody great hole in your pocket that running it will produce
Other than that, they are superb.

Was looking at dual fuelling it, as I couldn't afford to run it otherwise
Any idea what they are normally worth? Theres a couple in Japland for $3k with around 200k on the clock, so thought it might be worth cutting the arse off, and being a Toyota, I wouldn't care if I wrecked it

How RUDE!
Extra $1200 for shipping, which is still cheap I would've thought.

Early 80 series had problems with the front diff housing not being strong enough for the high pinion when reversing hard, resulting in missing teeth on crown wheel and/or pinion. Later models are double skinned and much stronger. Stay in forward gears and it will last forever (almost).

How does the housing cause the missing teeth on a crown wheel? I just assumed it was because of the light weight hilux diff in the front and the use of the lockers that caused the problems. What actual part of the housing deformed enough to cause the is problem.
Onto more weaknesses with the 80 series.
1 Chassis strength around the steering box and panhard rod mount. Toyota only spot welded the anti crush sleaves through the chassis member. This is where the cracks begin. I'm onto my fourth attempt at repairing the chassis. Got it right this time.
2 Power steering system. To small and it burns the fluid all the time when running big tyres. I think its the externally mounted pump on the 3F so your better off.
3 Big end bearings need doing every 100,000km. Again its the diesel engine so your ok there too.
4Complex air con system that claps out regularly.
5 Weak electric windows that get slower and slower with 4wding.
6 Heater fan speed buttons break off with use.
7 Cruise control seems to work sometimes.
8 Electric window controls on driver and passenger side have both fallen off when bumped with knee.
9 Forever wearing through stub shaft inner brass bush because they didn't upgrade to a roller bearing when they went to full time 4WD.
10 Will think of some more later. I really do love my 80 though.
Cheers

Who wrecks Cruiser's here in NZ?
Would love to get my hands on a high pinion front diff head out of an 80 or 100 Series.
What are they worth as a ball park figure?

I gather you mean as in "pulls apart/dismantels" as opposed to "stuffs them"
Try Lineside Auto aka Just Cruisers in Christchurch - also specialise in hilux.

The reason the teeth go missing is that the housing flexs too much, allowing crown wheel to pinion tolerances to change, causing numerous teeth to disappear under stressful circumstances. Later models have double skin diff housing.

You might have to draw me a picutre here!
From my limited knowledge of how a diff works. The crown wheel to pinion tolerances are set by the carrier bearings adjustments and the pinion shaft crushable sleave or shims. Both of these are part off the diff head. How does the housing flex change these clearances?

I have an 80 diesel, 1HD-T with 180,000kms and no big-end problems. Its a 1994 and I change oil and filter every 5,000 kms.
Just one curious question, I have replaced front axle seals like every six months. Why is this happening? Any body has an idea how to set the axle seals?
Mine is a full-time model VX LImited, and I have strenthened the steering box mount/panhard mount as well.
