Hi,

Just went for my WOF and they picked up a couple of things, ball joint needs fixing, easy, tighten wheel bearing, easy (I think), tighten rear suspension bush, easy,

But they also said my power steering unit was leaking (the bit which directly attaches to the steering arms etc).

Anyway, has anyone pulled one of these apart? Is it easy? Am I likely to just need a new seal or a whole new unit?

This is what i rote last year.

I was quoted $500. Because thay needed to take it apart to replace th input shaft because the seel was leeking. Whot i did is replaced the seel with a new one $4.50.
Because the shaft is all eaady got a worn grove in it you can get away with a smaller seel.i think its a 18mm inside. you cant buy the 18.7 original seel from the local bearing shop, but the 18mm works fine (Dont quote me on the size) and i pased my wof, but the man wasent pleased about there being old oil around the area.
i took my box out ( the bottom , not easy) but now i know you can do it in place.
$4.50 or $500.00 same result.

Does anybody have the seal measurements or part number? Mine needs replacing but I don't want it off the road longer than necessary so I would like to be able to get the seal before I pull it apart.

Do you need it to be replaced for a wof?

Yes, even if I clean it up it will still be a noticeable leak when get there and they check it out.

Haha, yeah, drain the oil, give it a good clean and away you go, until next warrant. Just warm your arms up before you go to your warrant place.

Just now retreaved the old seal from the shed.
Note. This is for a power sterring box.
It reads KOYO - OP MHSAF 18.7 35 7P 25.
But it measures slightly diffrent.
18.7mm could be the inside, 34mm could be the outside, 7mm could be the thickness. 25 dont know.
A bit strange it only measures 34mm when it has 35 printed on it.
If you get a bunch of seals with similar dimentions im sure one would fit. Or take it to the man, get it done right , then no worries.

I had a look at my steering box leak today and it looks like I solved my leak. Took the top of the steering box in the car and found that inside the top is a needle roller bearing (watch out as the needles can fallout, luckily mine landed on the driveway and not in the steering box) and above that is a rubber o-ring type of seal that has obviously worn a little letting the oil force it's way past under pressure. I put the top back on the box and got a small o-ring (approx. 10mm OD and 1mm thick and put that on the shaft and tightened the nut back down. Topped up the oil and took it for a drive and no more leak.
