Oil pressure and Compression, tappet noise & body mounts

I am loking for a 4wd and it was mentioned to look at the above aspects. Can someone explain in basic terms what they are and how to check these areas?
How do I know if the pressure and compression is bad?
What sound does tappet noise make?
where do I locate the body mounts - what things do I look for?

These are probably basic questions - but being new I just dont know

Get a leakdown and compression test done. Don't buy any diesel without doing this. I have even had it done for petrols. Tappet noise could just allude to them needing a tighten or more??? Body mounts are the rubber mounts that attach the body to the chassis, usually down each side about ten approx all up. They should not be worn/perished and bolts aren't rusted and tight. What sort of truck you looking at.

Hi al - there are a few I have been looking at -
-A 1990 surf 3000cc 116,000km about 4k
-A 1990 2l petrol with some mod's 144,000km about 4.7k
-A 1994 ssrx surf 3000cc petrol 140,000km about 5.5k

I know the petrol will be up there incomparision with a diesel, but I just dont know enough about diesel engines.

Not a toymotor expert but there are plenty on here that are. Will have alook at them tonite at home as I can't viem Trademe at work :evil: bastards.

Personally I would take the two litre petrol based on those 3. Those 3.0V6's are expensive to run, go great but you pay for the pleasure. The 2.0L looks tidy and well modified too. Cheers

Yeah I would think you could start a small war with the money you put in per year - but I bike to work so everyday running cost would be down. The 2l does look tidy - Not sure about the mods as I am not that well informed as to analysing how well they have been done.

those 3.0lV6 surfs are thirsty bastards :evil: I have a 1992 5spd manual one of these and just tested my fuel efficency going to chch this weekend - to get from Queenstown to Geraldine was 334km took 50.04 litres which gives a grand total of 6.65km/l ! This is on 32 inch tyres with a snorkel and a custom exhaust system

If you plan on doing much on road driving with it aswell look at the 3.0l Diesel they arent much slower than the V6 Petrol and are loads better fr towing etc too. Just make sure you get that compression and leak down test before committing to anything though - all the best with the truck hunting

no i wouldnt get a compression and leak down test done on a petrol but i would take it to an independent (independent of the car company or indiviual) garage to be checked out - if you dont no too much about them always best to spend a little bit on a check up and make sure you get a good deal

it all depends how much you want to spend and what you want it for. i personally wouldnt buy the first one, seems abit expensive, sure its nicer than the others but for the money i dont think you get that much more really. if its a toss up between the last two then you need to look at what you want. the 2L has had about $2000 of mods done to it that you would want to do to make the other a good 4wd (but there is still a good couple grand that can still be done!) and you would really want to get a cert worth about $350. Apart from that and the lovely blue interior on the v6 the only difference is the engine. take them both for a drive and see which you like more, both are good reliable engines (my 3L v6 has done 275000ks and still doesn't need oil between changes) that use heaps of gas the v6 will use a little more but has more power, therefore take them for a drive and see what you like more. remember that the v6 will go slower when you put bigger wheels on.
